Android isn't really a full blown RTOS and can't be used on certain classes of medical devices (class III vs class I? or vice-versa). I think there's extended support until 2023 and manufacturers have option to sell it installed for even longer. Moving to a Linus RT flavour is a daunting task if messing with ventilators or x-ray/mri machines ... you get similar embedded devices in retail tills/bar code scanner and weird cheque scanners in finance etc... could it be medical devices was my first thought...

Thanks Rachel. I didn't realized this niche is so dominated by MSFT. Or is it simply ignored by other players?

I think it's more that when you get into single board computer (SBC) land and arm chips etc there's a whole bunch of RTOSs that those of us in Citrix/laptop land don't know well. For medical/automotive the small nature of an RTOS is key to how it's tested and proved safe that bigger OSs can't do https://developer.arm.com/tools-and-software/embedded/rtos-partners
