If I had to guess, this sounds like it's up @Leee Jeffries alley.
l
For what sort of workload? What's the reason for the ask? Most of the tweaks I am familiar with are based around SMB tweaks, mostly related to timings and connection limits but it depends on the workload.
j
Just trying to improve the file server performance in my lab which is hosting profile VHDs
l
Your lab is all on one machine right? So plenty of bandwidth?
j
Yep
l
What are you trying to increase? Responsiveness or bandwidth, or just generally everything?
j
Logon speed. The profile mounts pretty rapidly but then there's a drag as it seems to expand everything out, so wondering if improving the file server response might help things
l
School run chap, will come back to you.
j
No rush mate. Doing a few tweaks I've found on t'intertubes now
l
In the main, things are pretty well balanced. In 2008R2 there were a lot of things to look at, not so much now.
Server: Higher concurrent limit to allow for higher bandwidth transfer HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Smb2CreditsMax = 12288 All more I/O to queue in the storage subsystem - 2 additional threads HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Executive\AdditionalCriticalWorkerThreads = 20 Double the standard asynchronous commands HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\AsynchronousCredits = 1024 Allows more threads per I/O queue HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\MaxThreadsPerQueue = 40 Improves client latency HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\TreatHostAsStableStorage = 1 Client: HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\parameters\DisableBandwidthThrottling = 1
Next step would be networking tweaks.
I'd be interested to have a look to see where your delay is.
j
I've managed to shave a few seconds off by tweaking some Registry entries for the Server service
Pretty much along same lines as you just posted 😀
l
Those tweaks I put in for SMB usually allow file services to be more resilient and handle more connections effectively. I feel a blog article brewing 😉
j
That would be good mate, particularly if it was aimed at things like VHD storage on file servers
👍 2
Are those decimal values you've put in for the DWORD values, yeah?
l
Yes chap, I should have stated that.
👍 1
j
Seems to have strimmed an extra 0.4 seconds, by putting in the bits I hadn't already
It all counts
Probably good enough for my upcoming blog to say "tweaking your file shares/servers is vital as evidenced here. Please refer to Leee's detailed blog at xxxxxxxx for more details" 😉
l
Ha ha, I'll try and put something together ;-)
Time is short right now
