Windows 11 - meh. Just another version of Windows 10. Teams built-in - is that another NetScape moment? Are they going to kill Slack by giving it away for free? Or do you still have to buy the 365 license and log in to activate? It's just another iteration with nothing much to offer in the way of new that means we will have to hack our way around things to keep them easy for the user. But look on the bright side - we get paid

r
Good way to look at it man.
j
I remember the farce that was Windows 8 and 8.1. If it isn't as bad as that, then it's not going to be too bad
r
true
t
Windows 8/8.1 <shudder> The Windows ME of the current era!
r
LOL, yea
d
Is teams actually built into 11 then or just win 11 built with hooks for teams. If it's built in that surely will affect the teams release cycle. Need to try and get my hands on it to play but I assume it's only available from less than desirable locations at present.
c
Win XP - good Win Vista - bad Win 7 - good Win 8/8.1 - bad Win 10 - good Win 11 - bad??
n
Windows ME was the only MS OS I ever paid for. Vowed to never do it again, haha.
11’s UI looks decent in some areas. They basically just cloned MacOS,
a
Have started playing with it hooked up in my CVAD lab. So far based on the stats in Director it looks to be processing logons faster than a base Win 10 build. Although it does like to reserve more memory for the OS straight after boot than Win 10 so maybe it's now caching more. OS persoanlisation is going to be interesting with the new start menu not seeming to take a layout xml. With the Insider Preview build coming out next week it will be interesting to see how it compares to the leaked ISO version.
t
God horrible layout I bet there's no more control panel either Imagine investing millions in updating to W10 knowing full well W11 is around the corner
so we had a call with Praim and they are going to test the issue in their test lab theory was the 1 gig ram on the thin client, so I've just updated it to 4gig same issue after a reboot but fine on a cold shutdown is fine until you sign out and back on, I'm wondering it its to do with the fact there very little Blast GPO /admx settings on the W10 session or W7, maybe we need to adjust the settings, can't be a codec issue as the problem only happens after you reconnect to a session
n
TPM 1.2 or 2.0, depending on which MS doc you read, is a requirement. So my box at home already fails to meet that standard.
r
My home PC failed as well LOL. But looks like Team is built in, So all that Citrix Teams tweaks, May have to be redone, unless its the machine verion with allusers and alluser = 1.
Yea they are making it look smooth I would say
n
I will use this as an excuse to build a new PC...
r
I cant seem to find it anymore to download. Other than shady sites.
Someone drop a ISO on a share and share it out to all of us LOL jk
Yea, the Compatibly checker said my machine is 10 years lol
n
There are other requirements, like a minimum of an 8-series Intel chipset. But I don't see if that's a hard or soft requirement, like TPM.
j
tpm seems like it could be a dealbreaker for wide adoption on consumer gear
n
Yep - especially if it's 2.0.
j
I did catch this https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-announces-windows-11-here-is-what-you-need-to-know/   "As part of the release of Windows 11, Microsoft plans to split Windows development into two branches - a Windows 10 branch for the enterprise that doesn't want to rush into a new OS and Windows 11 for consumers."
j
FFS. Yet another split. What happened to aligning the damned thing? Why can't they just have one OS with a tickbox at start "is this for enterprise or home?" If they select home, they get all the shite, if they select Enterprise, they get admin control
n
Stop trying to make sense.
j
Windows Server can die as well - once RDSH shifts to Win10MU (or Win11MU) I don't see the need for it
Not beyond Core, anyway
m
There was a tweet mentioning that the built-in Teams app will no longerbe based on Electron. THAT is good...
j
Yeah I saw that - but apparently based on Edge, IIRC? Doesn't fill me with warm and fuzzy feelings
😂 1
n
I want to see it in action, personally. As much as I hate Electron, MS could still find a way to make Teams worse.
m
indeed. WebView2 whatever this means...
r
Curious how there strategy is going to be around VDI. Seems like the focus on physical computer first. Then 1-3 years later do VDI documentation layout. After many of use beat our heads against the wall. I hate when new OS come out, for me its like going back to the beginning and trying to figure out what breaks.
m
r
If they allow Win11MU to be used on Prem. That will be the breaker for alot of folks
m
WinxMU is now called AZURE VIrtual Desktop. Not sure if this will come on-prem
👍 1
e
Playing, Teams integration is not in the leaked ISO
And BTW App-V works perfectly on WS2022
j
There may still be an antitrust question to answer if MS cloud-lock the successor to RDSH
e
And when they start watching Netflix....
j
That Start Menu - on dual monitors, does that mean it appears in the middle of both?
r
yea, good question
n
Wouldn't surprise me - that's how it is in W10 unless you use a 3rd party tool. I use Classic Shell on my box to limit it to one monitor.
Otherwise it's like Homer Simpson's dream car - a horn here, here, here, and here.
Extend the the taskbar to the other screens, though.
j
Can you expand the taskbar across both? If so, how does it look?
n
Just give us RDP access to your VM, actually...
😂 2
e
3 screen puts the Task Bar in Center of the Primary Monitor
n
What about this?
Show taskbar on all displays
j
I've got loads of users with the taskbar across all monitors, just curious how it affects them
e
I don't see Multiple Displays and Taskbar option
n
lol, man, I'm going to laugh if that was depricated.
Having your apps all show up on one taskbar, rather than the taskbar they are viewed on, is absurd.
j
WHERE THE F*CK IS THE WINX MENU
oh I found iot
*it
It's been at least six years since I had a rage at a new version of Windows. See, the Windows 10 "softly softly" model worked! Microsoft why have you not learned
They can get f*cked with that
e
MSIX for the win LOL
j
I notice there are still UWP apps hanging about in there. Trying to kill them for fun now
I honestly thought that this cycle of "time to learn a whole new OS and upgrade!" was finished with Windows 10. I've just compared an RTM Windows 10 to 21H1 and the difference is stark, but the changes were incremental enough for us to get used to them without a big bump. Why have they suddenly gone back to this "big bang" model? The whole "drip-feed" of new features was working fine, it wasn't perfect, but it was much more devops-y and the users didn't get hit with huge changes, we could help them around the changes with an email or video. This is a retrograde step. I really though MS had done a good job with "constant Windows updates" - they hadn't screwed anything too badly, the release cycle was never too far away from the previous, and enterprises had different options for cadence. This is a BIG own goal, going back to the XP --> Vista --> 7 --> 8 model.
n
Vista and 8 were abominations.
j
Yeah, but that's why the "big bang" model failed so spectacularly - it was always too much, too quickly. Look at W10 RTM against the latest, they don't really look the same at all - but we've become inured to it by a "frog-boiling" approach. I can't understand why MS would want to go back to the previous model - SURELY every software developer moves slowly but regularly now?
Seriously considering about having a blog rant about this
So when you launch apps, do they stack up to the right of the taskbar until your Start Menu moves all the way across to the left finally? Seems that they do
At least Chocolatey still works. I'm going to put down the Win11 image now
This "Built-in Teams" seems to be non-existent - having to install it
n
Is there a way to grab an ISO of W11 now for eval, without using the Insider program?
j
Yeah I just grabbed a torrent of it
n
Welp, my box crashed during the W11 device setup (VMware Workstation Pro 16).
j
It's very alpha
n
Came across this:
😠 2
We have way more users who put the taskbar on the left hand side than I care to admit.
c
Do we have the ISO available already?
j
It's out on some pirate sites
🙀 1
n
The more I look into the hardware requirements, the more pissed off I get. Microsoft is rightfully taking a lot of shit online right now thanks to their absurd requirements, and the only responses I'm seeing are "well, you can just upgrade your hardware". How about you don't fuck over anyone with a CPU older than 5 years?
j
VDI in the cloud! 😉

j
F*cking JSON
n
☝️What he said.
m
MS is in the hardware business too, a new OS release with new hardware requirements means more sales of new Surfaces and also keeps their hardware partners happy. You need to realize that the desktop OS wasn’t made for enterprise, it’s made to drive sales of consumer hardware. It happens with every new version release. I’m not saying don’t get mad about it, but you shouldn’t be at all suprised.
n
Not surprised at all. They're still muppets for doing it.
