Assuming that is x64 Office as well?
j
Yup. Seen it around a few deployments, reached breaking point with a heavy excel customer today
j
Is "enable multi-threaded calculation" on for all cores
j
That is the option that goes away. It gets hard locked at 2 from what I’ve seen
r
thats.... awful...
n
Nope sorry, but I can see that option isnt around. Guessing this is O365 apps for Enterprise?
j
Yeah it is. Only on ms win10, I can’t find anything anywhere, AVD and Citrix based
r
Excel with 2 cores is near unusable
i ran some tests a while back, and simply opening excel files took 100% longer with 2 cores vs 4
n
Strangely, I’ve not had any complaints and I work with a few customers with lots of number crunching Excel spreadsheets. Maybe they aren’t working hard enough!! it appears someone has made a decision for us as they know best (not). I wonder if it’s the same issue in Svr 2019 RDSH
r
MS knows best.. 🙄
j
I've got a finance customer on WVD and they're often bitching about Excel performance. Would be amusing if this was the cause (as they're such arrogant pests, I'd take great pleasure in telling them)
r
sounds like that would be exactly it
d
Don't know the reason behind it but perhaps this helps changing the behavior. MS might just have dropped an Is there a .XALM in XLSTART that forces it to use 2 Cores. If not, dropping one in there after deployment might set it to the number of cores that you desire. I did a quick search here in Salesforce and saw how Remko Weijnen describes the XALM creation: https://www.remkoweijnen.nl/blog/2012/06/08/excel-2010-multi-threaded-calculation/ Besides that I found another item refering to a script described here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/lock-down-excel-cpu-usage-multi-user-environment-danny-van-leeuwen/
r
That's pretty neat. Nice find
j
I don’t think this happens on server OS, probably why the above articles exist! I’ll give this a crack (Remkos approach) and see if I can reverse the behaviour to unlock it - customer ditched win10 multi and going back to single session OS, makes more sense for their use case anyway but good to know for about when designing … @Dennis van Dam thank you
