Ask @Joe Shonk. MCSIO was broken for a long time. It has been usable for a few releases now is my understanding.
n
thanks for tagging him. it seems that the 19 releases were pure garbage, but it has gotten alot better in 20/21 vda's
r
We switched to using the same drivers as pvs.
w
In what release?
n
@Rob Zylowski are you a citrix employee?
b
Rob is a Citrix employee
r
@Webster Webster 1903
w
has @Joe Shonk said that mcsio is good for prod use? :)
j
It's perfectly fine since the switch, I've used it in many deployments across many platforms, no issues anymore

n
any benefit @James Kindon with an ssd array?
j
Mmmm still gonna be faster to memory than onto disk regardless of the speed, so you will probably still get a nice win, I always do it on prem regardless of the backend storage, no real reason not to IMHO - different story in cloud deployments of course

We need MCSIO in our environment, as profiles loading on the system disk are filling them up to full capacity, but we are short on RAM, for one, but then I fail to enable it, when I install the VDA (2003) with MCSIO feature added/enabled the driver won't be installed and the component is missing. I need to troubleshoot this.
n
so here's my testing...not good. cloned the prod gold image, new catalog with 512 and 10gb mcsio disk, played youtube and monitored with controlup. 17ms of write latency was pretty consistent, our average is between 0 and 1 (all ssd array). same test on the normal prod image without mscio was 0-1 as expected. it took about 5 mins for a logoff to process on the mcsio vm as well.....vda is 2009 with w10 ltsc doesn't look good at all
o
Some folks I work with are reporting terrible results on an MCSIO enabled machine catalog as well. What is the storage back end in your case?
n
ssd array
o
I'm more keen to enable it on legacy / spinners, but that's just me
n
agree. i'm not opposed to gaining some performance however things shouldnt be worse obviously.
o
Most of the benchmarking troubleshooting stuff i've seen for MCSIO comes from older blogs posts, and even then, it's just using perfmon / controlup / LoginVSI. @Rob Zylowski: does Citrix have any tools for troubleshooting MCSIO?
r
Its hard to troubleshoot. Most issues have to do with the cache disk getting filled up and procmon is the best tool for that. Im not sure why Nick would see such poor performance by adding MCSIO.
j
Clean install and not upgraded from 7.15 I hope?
n
@Rob Zylowski the 10gb disk was only 2gb full
r
Yea the cache disk filling up doesn’t cause performance issues but it will blue screen. For performance i would be wondering about antivirus or some other security application.
m
The drivers wouldn't install at all with the command line options in several versions so you need to double check the drivers are actually present. I saw awful performance until I realized it was enabled on the catalog and the drivers weren't in the image
n
how do you check that?
m
There are perfmon counters that get installed
n
gotcha
m
If they aren't present, the driver install didn't happen
n
i believe i did have some gotta check again
m
I got told by a few people that if you're on nutanix backend there's no point in mcsio
w
I believe that is correct, but @Jarian Gibson is the main brain of knowledge for that
j
Don't use MCSIO or PVS RAM cache on Nutanix. It's in our BPG guide.
n
with my latency running between 0 and 1, i'm not sure i'm going to gain any benefit either, just something i am playing with
