We had ivanti before wem actually.... I'm running out for the day now but can give some personal experiences later
b
Having done both I will say that Ivanti is a bit more feature rich and can get a bit more granular. However the setup and maintenance is more complex in my opinion so you have to balance the value vs the effort
r
Thanks guys, I read that Invanti has some cpu management like WEM. But I was curious if it's as good as WEM. I'm assuming it plays a part as well like WEM around making user logins and experience better as WEM does in my experience
b
My experience is that their CPU management is better. You have more options around controlling apps based on whether they are the focused app or a background app. The application management component is nice too from a security perspective. Cost is another factor. Ivanti wasn't cheap, plus deploy time.
r
That's great information, thank you
d
What you mean with Ivanti UEM? The old appsense , RES or EPM?
r
I used a generic term Because I don't know anything about ivanti
d
Ok if you want me to answer some questions on the RES or Appsense just let me know. I know Appsense pretty good and know the RES thing pretty perfect. Also helps me getting to know WEM better. Had some chats half a year ago to see if I could copy some of WEM features but it was then still less than what I have
r
I was looking at this, but I suppose it's older now based on the name around “appsense” https://www.davidwilkinson.co.uk/2017/03/28/citrix-wem-vs-appsense-features/
b
Yeah I was assuming th old appsense stuff
r
My apologies guys, I used the generic terms. I wasn't sure to be honest. I need to read up on what all invanti is and what products they offer compared to WEM .
d
Yeah so if you look at the time line on high speed it is: RES and Appsense were competitors both of them started at 1999, about 5 years ago ivanti bought Appsense and about 3 years ago they bought RES. Now RES and Appsense are both Ivanti. Still completely different products, e.g. Appsense application control is great where (my personal oppinion) the RES product is the successor in integrations, usability Support and community. Happy to discuss and compare features on the products with you if you like.
r
So I assume it's called workspace control now?
d
Appsense is User Workspace Manager and RES is Workspace Control
r
Ok I'll need to go read and figured out what these do and understand the comparison in regards to WEM
d
We can go over them in a session, better then just reading expensive words
m
Wem can't manage laptop, physical computer, no?
r
It can, if you have premium license
But I'm all VDI/SBC/RDSH whatever you want to call it these days. I don't mess with any physical stuff anymore. Other than hypervisors of course and my personal computer to get into my Workloads
Well I take some of that back. I'm always helping desktop team on workspace app stuff because they can't seem to understand it lol.

The next battle : wem vs res/iwc 😄
Uwm/appsense I have found a lot of bugs or features missing
d
Still you have a more mature product Musklor ;)
d
We have Ivanti UWM (Appsense), but use WEM for performance. We have found in our environment that it works better for us, which I know contradicts what @Benjamin Crill said. He and I have discussed it before. We are going to evaluate using WEM and FSLogix to replace Ivanti UWM to save cost. We'll have to see what we would be losing and determine if it is worth it or not.
The main reason we originally purchased UWM was for the Application Control. However, now we have another product that can do something similar. So we are thinking that, along with what WEM can do, may be good enough. Also, we do have Ivanti Security Controls, formerly Shavlik Patch for Servers, which now has the ability to do Application Control. Ivanti basically is bundling the AppSense Application Manager with Patch for Servers and calling it Security Controls.
r
Haven't used WEM, but we currently use all of Ivantis UWM including personalization and application control, performance manager. Performance manager is good, although they haven't had any real updates to it since 2018. Application control is a requirement for our industry, personalization and environment manager are very powerful and feature rich. However, this makes configuration and managment more complex and time consuming, let alone the backend infrastructure. For simplicity, use WEM.
d
If your company has strict guidelines for the packagers, they can deliver all the application-related configuration for UWM, you then only need to take care of the backend and non-app-related stuff. IWC does have performance-related features but not as powerful as UWM. on the other hand, IWC is very easy and quick to implement. (edit based on Maxime his feedback)
OK, that was communicated differently at that point internally and on several blogs, if I'm not correct there I'm sorry and will not post that anymore.
I'm going to believe you on your word as there's no one left at ivanti anymore who I can validate this with. I will help Ray where needed on sharing RES / Appsense information so he can compare that with WEM
m
yes for sure, back to the topic.
