What even uses multicast that you would be using in VDI?
The only time I ever tried to play with multicast was when iptv was a thing

Not a clue. Just hearing "we can't use virtual desktops because they don't support multicast". Sounds like bollocks to me
m
me too, I honestly don’t know who needs multicast
j
Might be a market trading data thing
But I would expect to have heard of it before now

I know bloomberg uses multicast but I’ve only ever dealtt with that in terms of the dedicated hardware on their dedicated network
j
And no matter what, I don't see how virtual desktops would differ from physicals in this respect

I used to get BT YouView which was basically IPTV using multicast. This traffic went through my pfsense VM running on vSphere so it must work 😀 I think back in the earlier days of the vmxnet3 driver it wasn't supported so folks stuck with the E1000 based vNic instead.

The only real difference is mulicast filtering prior to esxi 6.0, from what I can tell, and maybe the occasional bug to do with multicast and vmxnet drivers. That’s different from saying it’s not supported.

Both ESXi and XenServer support multicast - XenServer's used to be quite flaky and there were a bunch of workarounds turnign it off (but I'm talking best part of a decade ago).... sounds odd
