Unfortunately this attitude is quite common. They'd sooner have something from a big vendor because then they for some reason feel safe. Get a big distributor to buy BIS-F and sell it as part of a service, they will lap it up then because they've got a big throat to choke if anything goes wrong

I would say that you need to demostrate how it will help them. What problem is it solving for you? Ex. I spend 60 minutes sealing and preping my image. That's 12 hours each year so using this will give an extra day and a half to do something else. Or an image that goes out with a problem takes 2 hours to roll back, another hour to fix, etc so using this will help ensure consistency and eliminate half a day of work
They need to see it as something that solves an existing problem rather than another tool to manage
r
Yea both are right. @James Rankin I am sure you deal with this more than be being you been around in this game a lot longer. I agree with what you are saying as well. @Benjamin Crill yes, good point. I shown them some but not all of it. I going to setup a meeting to show them what they do now, vs what they could be doing and getting back in return. They do to much manual steps, and this would cut down alot of it. I just need to break it all down and sell it. Folks will hate me for saying this, but I would buy this tool if it wasn't free. Just like @Rody Kossen and the HDX tool they built for extra features. His tool is free, but you can pay for it and get more bang for the buck.

If you can find support tickets internally that are related to an image going out with a problem or because of inconsistency, that will help you selling it internally

I had similar problems with AppVentix, and even though they were shown all the benefits and cost savings, they still kept saying "but what if it stops working in the middle of the night and we can't get someone to support it and we have users impacted?" It's just bullshit trying to justify their existence and drag everything out through process. They eventually purchased it through HCL, which is even more insane because if their HCL contract expires they lose the software license. Don't expect people in big companies to make sensible decisions. They're invariably utter morons who simply are trying to justify their wage packets by throwing out ludicrous blockers that make no sense

One of these days I'm flying to the UK just so I can have a beer with James Rankin 🙂
r
@Benjamin Crill when you buy that ticket, get me one lol.
b
London in Autumn seems like a nice thing to aim for. Perhaps James needs to see about getting Nutanix to sponsor and ask that a certain EUC consultant from Nutanix comes to speak. Just sayin'

complete job justification bullshit, have they even looked at the powershell script? something tells me defrag, cleanup, turning off updates, etc, etc isn't a security risk
r
Yea I hear ya Nick, They just put the Security blockers up first. But I will figure it out.
b
Don't be surprised if you get the support argument too. It's 'free' therefore who supports it if there is a problem. And if you say 'well we just go back to do it manually' be ready for the 'well why do we need it if we are planning to do it manually and can't use the tool we want to use'. Not saying I agree with any of these, just been a part of them and making sure you are ready. It's important to understand what they think is important (rightfully or wrongfully) and be ready to address those areas
r
True, I guess it's time for a PowerPoint( Hate powerpoints)/Demo and all that Jazz and compare it with what they do now, which is honestly a poop way.
b
Not necessarily a PPT unless appropriate for who you are going to be discussing it with. It might be better reviewing a spreadsheet that goes through 'time to deploy (my way vs your way), tickets related to imaging process (time to resolve those issues called out)'
r
Ok, that sounds better. Thanks man
