So, the first thing I thought of when I read this was that if it's a really old app, maybe it needs the "Start In" field to be properly specified to use the proper DLLs to interpret the RTD file. Which then led me to wonder if you were opening the RTF file through a File, Open function within the app or if you were double-clicking on the RTF file in explorer and relying on File Type Associations.
