interesting
j
Looks better than the previous app layering packaging process.

Numecent is awesome, but historically they've been very keen to stay in particular fields (education, especially). This may upset a lot of existing Numecent customers but certainly gives Citrix houses some strong tech to play with
The way it can virtualize on several different levels is well cool
Big game-changer for Citrix when it comes to dealing with difficult apps
n
Interesting. Probably going to mean another increase in licensing costs, though (htf can that still happen)
c
@James Rankin Not quite. We have customers in all verticals. Our presence with education is prominent because of our partnership with AppsAnywhere but we have historically excelled in Financial Services, Manufacturing, Energy, Gov, and many more.
๐Ÿ‘ 1
j
Well your CEO point blank refused to do a PoC for us in finance because he was scared the investment bank would sue if anything went wrong. Just saying
๐Ÿ‘€ 2
j
As long as they don't put it behind CPL only it should be a pretty big rollout. And hopefully it is not flex or daas only, as a lot of on-prem customers will want this.

c
Yeah, I'm sure many small companies may stay away from certain scenarios that don't serve the best interest of both parties. @James Rankin and that was... 3 years ago or more?
j
it was a while back, but it was a 100k plus potential deployment. I used to be quite a fan of Numecent tech until that incident
c
Not every company will work with you just because they are a named enterprise. Part of the success of the company is how the CEO protected his assets. If you didn't like it, sorry how it went down but Numecent isn't a giant machine. If you don't understand the legal jargon and nuances of the contracts, NDAs or whathaveyou, then it's not quite fair to say "I used to be a fan of the tech until .." but your opinion is all yours ๐Ÿ˜Š
j
Numecent as a company stalled out in 2015, and stopped growing. their market share in the app virt category is 9.3%, down from 15.2% last year, and Citrix is ranked #1 with 23.5% mindshare. This appears to be a patent play for a small company (35-40 employees) that stalled out in growth potential.

Yeah it is all mine, you're correct. I simply remarked that historically they seemed keen to inhabit certain verticals and you seem to have reinforced that. And in my 35+ years in enterprise IT I've only ever had one CEO phone me directly and tell me he was wary of working with a customer because he might get sued if the tech didn't work. and believe me, I've put a lot of small companies into big customers. Sounded to me like he didn't back his own tech to do what it was supposed to. But now that Citrix own it I guess that won't be a problem because Citrix have never been shy of pushing their tech into places even if it might not work. As you say this is just my humble opinion but my opinion did used to carry a bit of weight back in the day and I was a huge fan of Numecent's tech, but that incident made me wary of using them for years afterwards. Hopefully the acquisition might address that
โœ… 2
c
I didn't reinforce that. I commented that we have customers in most verticals but not working with yours, in particular, for x y or z reason does not mean that we stick to any lane or have preference. I think you are conflating the two. Again, sorry for your experience. Just note that you are putting a lot of assumptions out there, that is all.
n
So yeah, curious to see what this means for App Layering customers.
And somewhere, @James Kindon's ears just tingled
j
Well it does if your CEO expressly said "I'm not keen to work with investment banks". That means you're avoiding a particular vertical. Anyways not really interested in a pissing match about it, I know what happened and I've spoken to many others with similar experiences. Like I said, Citrix won't be shy

r
@Nick Panaccio yeah my thought as well.. Is this the end? (you can sing the rest of the song ๐Ÿ˜‰ )
j
App Layering is gash, glad there's something else better to replace it
๐Ÿคฃ 1
n
I will be the last man standing for app layering
j
As I will be for App-V ๐Ÿ˜‰

n
I'll still take App Layering over App-V, lol

j
Go and wash your mouth out, then flagellate yourself
n
ron swanson no
b
James you still have Tim ๐Ÿ™‚
j
Tim? Sorry if I'm slow on the uptake today...
n
wait, aren't you a Sunderland fan?
j
Sure, is that an issue? If any of you are Newcastle fans you're getting instantly muted
n
No, was looking at the Europa league draw and we've (AC Milan) got you.
j
Ah right! I've just been plotting my trip to Milan
n
punch an inter fan on your way home and I'll forever be grateful
j
My days of football violence are sadly behind me
b
Tim Mangan
j
Ah of course, I told you I was a bit slow on the go today
b
The one other AppV person I'm aware of
j
Calling Tim M an App-V "person" is like calling Benjamin Franklin an electrician
๐Ÿ‘ 1
j
My biggest take away is someone on this thread may be looking for a new job sooner than she might like. Citrix isn't going to have much interest in keeping partner reps, in their current structure, and anyone who has been around Citrix for very long would know how quickly they can be at letting people go.
c
Aww, that's so sweet that you're thinking of me! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Hi!

Hope it works out better than AppDNA
j
My grapevine is indicating this might have been something of a fire sale. The intent is not to replace App Layering, but to meet requirements App Layering can't.
โœ… 1
a
I like to hope that some of AppDNA spreads its dna into other citrix offerings like app layering and now cloudpaging. And Xenclient into Unicon
j
AppDNA was a huge opportunity for Citrix and they killed it. Never going to see anything from it now
j
I still roll a tear for Melio. Such a nice tool for PVS. Gone before it's time.
j
So how many people are still installing applications in their images? What apps (Home grown)? Are you still having to by a RDS Cal for that windows applications? How long will that continue?
j
Depends entirely on the customer, their employee skill levels, the apps and the tooling they have available
j
What would close the skill gap?
j
More money, more employees with the required skills, easier to use tech, different applications that are easier to get working, etc.
j
James, its nice to dream.... ๐Ÿ˜
i find that crap installers are the biggest issue.
You know AppDNA was pretty good and tearing apart screwy installers.
j
AppDNA was awesome at digging into all sorts of app behaviour and I don't know why Citrix killed it the way they did. Weirdness
j
What's support like .. do you get full support from ISVs like Microsoft? Are you required to get it working with it containerized or app virtual? I'm always wondering .. is support of legacy apps what's keeping golden images so bulky?
a
Is it fully on-prem solution or cloud based console?
n
I still like(d) App-V, so there are still a few of us left. Newbies seem to like pushing MSIX. Anyhow that's another story. It's an interesting acquisition and like all things with Citrix, time will tell how it pans out.
๐Ÿ‘ 2
c
@Arthur - if you are referring to the acquisition, we have both!

@chantelle.smith Thanks!
