Hello, we have deployed a non-persistent VDI infrastructure on Windows 11 24H2, but we are currently experiencing an issue with the search bar in the taskbar: the menu opens, but we are not getting any response from it. We have tried rebuilding the search index and setting up a user GPO to prevent internet searches. We have also tried repairing the appX Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers MicrosoftWindows.Client.WebExperience | Reset-AppxPackage Get-AppxPackage MicrosoftWindows.Client.WebExperience | Reset-AppxPackage Get-AppxPackage MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS | Reset-AppxPackage
j
Do you get the same behaviour if you search directly from the Start Menu?
w
yes, same result, on the master we didin't have this problems. For better comprehension, we didin't have fslogix, we have WEM and UPM profil
j
Interesting. We are seeing the same thing - master is fine, but when you start spinning images, the search breaks. Do you notice the Search process is going into a Suspended state, and if you kill a process called Resume, it starts working again?
w
at this moment, no, you show this with proc explorer ? or task manager?
j
Task Manager. When it is not working, SearchHost or whatever it is called shows as Suspended
w
not for me
j
Hmmm. OK. Perhaps not the same issue then.
j
What profile solution? Have you enabled the roaming of the search db?
j
No profile solution for us, they're fully persistent instances. OP said UPM if I remembered correctly
w
Yes for us, we have upm profile on this VDI. No this option is not set
we are at this moment on 2203, we have a update on september on 2402
For a test, I deploy à W11 24H2 without optimisation and a VDA with 2402 version, same result Maybe a problems on upm GPO ? @Jeff Riechers yoou talk about Roaming, but i have roaming for outlook, i didn't have a other parameter for this
Hi, after a other test, we have the same problems with W11 23h2
j
Did you try this GPO - Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Search Open “Don’t search the web or display web results in Search”. Set the policy to Enabled.
w
Yes I tried this, but not bether, I open a case on citrix support, I tell you if we find something We try without citrix component (RDP) and the search bar work
j
Microsoft seem to think that should fix it - not holding my breath though
👀 1
You took the VDA off and it worked?
w
Yes, in RDP it seems to work for us
j
j
Out of interest, what state is the App Readiness service in? If it's not running, start it and see if that makes a difference.
j
Will let you know when I next get an image with the issue.
w
Hi, at this time, no respons from citrix support, but, we try something, on the master we make this action: Windows 11 : désactiver la recherche Bing dans le menu Démarrer It's un local gpp policie and it work for us. We try with GPO policies on domain, but i think the AD compatibilty is not optimise for VDI W11
j
Thanks @WEBER Jonathan. I am having the same search bar issue with CVAD 2507 and Windows 11 24H2. I did a quick test with the "DisableSearchBoxSuggestions" registry key, and that fixed the issue.

j
Details please???
j
For my test all I did was: •
New-Item -Path HKCU:\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer
New-ItemProperty -Path HKCU:\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer -Name DisableSearchBoxSuggestions -PropertyType DWord -Value 1
Stop-Process -Name explorer -Force
to restart explorer
I don't have time to test on a master image right now but testing the
Turn off display of recent search entries in File Explorer search box
policy at "User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer" and restarting the explorer process got the search bar working as well.
w
@J Burns yo push this with powershell or GPO ?
j
So far, I just tried quickly while in a session for the policy and reg test.
I ended up getting rid of the registry key and just tested out
Stop-Process -Name SearchHost,StartMenuExperienceHost
(doesn't cause the screen to flicker like with explorer) and that got the search bar working, testing over a few different non-persistent sessions.
j
@J Burns, nice work. So will you be running this as a logon script?
w
@J Burns at this time, you didn't us regedit key but just a logon script ? With GPO or WEM ?
j
I’ve been testing out just using a logon script with GPO to restart the SearchHost and StartMenuExperienceHost processes. I’m still testing while working on other items for a CVAD 2507 upgrade, but I haven’t had the search bar issue again since implementing that.
j
Fix is on the way from MS

This morning on a master...
for information, for us, not better with this update. VDI no persistant without internet. We make this on master
j
So you still have the issue?
w
with the local policy, no I test with the new update from MS now on this master
