If I want to create a small Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session POC using my existing Citrix Cloud infrastructure can I simply create a Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session VM to be used as the master image for MCS? Do I need to use Azure Virtual Desktop and create a pool if I plan to use Citrix Cloud and MCS? Thanks
r
Yes you can just set up a master image ono a multisession win11 just install the multisession vda
j
No need for any AVD stuff
j
Awesome thanks!
For clarification, is running Win 11 E MS outside of AVD only allowed because its a POC? Was hoping I could do it in production too if wanted.. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/windows-multisession-faq#can-i-run-windows-enterprise-mul[…]he-azure-virtual-desktop-service Can I run Windows Enterprise multi-session outside of the Azure Virtual Desktop service? We don't allow customers to run Windows Enterprise multi-session in production environments outside of the Azure Virtual Desktop service. Only Microsoft or the Azure Virtual Desktop Approved Providers, Citrix and Omnissa, can provide access to the Azure Virtual Desktop service. It's against the licensing agreement to run Windows multi-session outside of the Azure Virtual Desktop service for production purposes.

We have many many customers running it in production.

Thanks, that's the link that says "We don't allow customers to run Windows Enterprise multi-session in production environments outside of the Azure Virtual Desktop service." that's why its confusing..
r
Except for citrix and omnissa
j
Yeah "Only Microsoft or the Azure Virtual Desktop Approved Providers, Citrix and Omnissa, can provide access to the Azure Virtual Desktop service". Obviously this mentioning the AVD service for those approved providers still sounds like AVD only but maybe I'm just reading it wrong lol
s
No you cannot. W11 multi-session is only allowed when it runs on AVD. Citrix and Omnissa must use the "quick deploy" option to run W11 multi-session on AVD. If you want to run VM on-prem or in your cloud provider (google or AWS for instance), this is not allowed. Technically, nothing prevents you from, but it is going against the license agreement.
Only allowed for POC, but not for Prod.
j
Yeah, I'm specifically talking about running W11 multi-session in Azure just outside of AVD, mostly because it doesn't seem needed with MCS
j
It’s word soup. You most definitely can run win11 multi session in azure, using Citrix or omnissa to provision and broker a connection in production. Win11 multi is classified as a feature of AVD, as such, Citrix or omnissa are providers of AVD. You don’t need to do anything with the AVD brokering components.

Thanks all, going to go ahead and likely use W11 MS with Citrix Cloud in production Azure outside of AVD; with the appropriate M365 licensing, Windows Server licensing, and Azure VM/storage costs, there is no way we should be violating any licensing agreements..
r
pfff, for a minute I thought we need to develop a Quick deploy option 😉
