A customer recently migrated from vSphere to Nutanix AHV. We re-build the master, created a new catalog without MCSIO. The logon times to the new image (which is the same as the old, with NGT instead of VMware Tools) are about 40% higher. Also the disk rates are pretty bad. Any recommendations?
k
This looks like non persistent, NGT isn’t supported for those catalogs

lots of possibilities to take into account. What in the logon is taking longer or is it all things? Resource-wise they are configured identically?

So there are a few things there • You are comparing disk to memory - MCSIO is often going to show you crazy speeds due to it writing to memory • CrystalDiskMark isn’t really the best tool to be using without understanding it’s ins and outs, particularly with how our OpLog works. Here is a handy read that explains some things https://portal.nutanix.com/page/documents/kbs/details?targetId=kA07V000000LWkcSAG • As the lads noted above, don’t put NGT on your image. It won’t impact your performance, but it’s not supported for provisioning • Would be interesting to know your VirtIO driver and AOS/AHV versions

Thanks for your input. CrystalDiskMark was just some data to show, the increased logon times are what the user complain about 😉 Got a call with Gaby today, she will have a look. Will keep you updated. I agree with your first point when we talk over writes, however MCSIO does no caching in reads, does it?
j
Nice, Gaby is great. Happy to lend eyes if needed also. I am pretty sure MCSIO has a big impact on reads - unless I missed something

Excuse me, why is NGT not supported for provisioning and is there an official document about this?

@TS: Nutanix Guest Tools and Nutanix VirtIO You can install Nutanix Guest Tools (NGT) in a guest VM to enable advanced VM functionality. The NGT Guest Agent service uses SSL to communicate with the guest tools services through the Nutanix cluster IP address. Each VM running NGT needs a unique certificate pair to communicate with guest tools services. Currently, you can't clone or provision NGT. Follow these best practices for NGT and Nutanix VirtIO on Nutanix AHV VMs: • When you use Citrix App Layering, MCS, or Provisioning on Nutanix, don't install and enable NGT on base images. • If you use Citrix MCS to deploy a full-clone image, you can install NGT after the MCS full-clone deployment finishes. • Only install VirtIO drivers in base images with Citrix App Layering, MCS, or Provisioning nonpersistent images. Great, thanks a lot!👍

Hi all, still on troubleshooting. Is this "XD_"-thing still valid?!
j
nope, I've lodged a ticket with Citrix to have this fixed up
