I got a message about a week ago letting me know that my Microsoft 365 subscription was going from $99 to $129 at my next renewal. Pretty steep increase if you ask me. Then today I get another email from them stating that, as expected, the free 60 minutes of the now discontinued Skype would no longer be included but additionally, Publisher would not be included either. So, you want to increase my price by 30% and reduce the amount of benefits too? Who do you think you are, Netflix? I guess it is time to switch to open source.
r
Who would have thought monopolies are bad?

Why, the whole family? Microsoft 365 Business Premium is only $22/month
r
You are thinking 22 a month is better than $129 annually?
😆 1
n
I don't even think it's worth $99/year, personally...

Me neither, hence the cancellation
v
notepad is better
r
there are enough free or near-free options... I am use some free version at home (started purely as a test) and never had the need for MS office since. Same goes with Adobe creative cloud, their licensing monopoly makes it also impossible to work with them.. also cancelling them in May. There are tons of good alternatives..

I haven't paid for a Microsoft OS since WindowsME, purely out of spite. And I never will again.

Once my kids are done with school I will probably cancel mine. Problem is I like that 1 TB Onedrive storage for everyone, as I have all their computers, phones, and VM backing up to there. But maybe I will just switch to my own storage device and go back to doing personal backups.

#SelfHosted
r
I have that with Google.. I pay for 2TB and my kids and my mother are using that to backup their mobiles and for school storage Right now looking at selfhosting but enough jobs on my plate and it has been moved to after summer
r
Immich and NextCloud. 🙂

r
and that is another thing.. I really like to go selfhosted or European cloud.
r
Check out Saltbox. Fantastic tool to do all things self-hosted.
r
it's going on the whiteboard.. will check it out
j
I'm potentially looking at this to replace my synology in the future. https://hexos.com/
r
Ah, partnered with TrueNAS, very nice. I run TrueNAS at home on an old Datto, then Saltbox on a VM. Saltbox is just an opensource platform using docker/ansible to deploy everything with Traefik reverse-proxy front end with LE integration.
r
I don't care about data storage.. hardly have anything to store of value.. I care about tagging photos. Google and Apple suck at this, so I want to go self hosted and find the solution that allows me to tag freely.. not date, location but free
r
Immich is a perfect replacement for Google Photos... Has tagging
r
Had not heard of Immich, now I am intrigued. Running NextCloud and built my own media server etc. Lots of playing around in my lab. I do like the idea of Ansible deployed etc.
r
you will LOVE saltbox then.
r
Not sure I want to start over with Saltbox. Well established media library.
r
Yeah, I can understand that. But, for sure check out Immich.

So @Ryan Gallier I am in the middle of building a NAS to work together with my QNAP/Synology. Got a case, now need to decide, UnRAID or TrueNAS
Plex/Sonarr/all-the-arrs will be there too, with Pi-Hole I guess on Docker
r
I took an old Datto and run TrueNAS on it. I think it's great. Saltbox is amazing for all of the arr suites. Unmatched, imo. @Cláudio Rodrigues
Plus.. Adguard Home > Pi-Hole...
r
Why Adguard > PiHole?
r
DNS over TLS, and the ability to do unblocks per single IP
r
Interesting
And it runs on a Pi?
r
pi, docker, linux, anything.

On the firewall front, I just built my own on a fanless mini pc running opnsense. Amazing having big traffic management with 2.5 GB internet and networking. Works great virtual as well. I use an opnsense vm in Azure as my connection to it from my home lab, easy to boot when needed to save money.

OPNsense is amazing. Love it.

Did you try UnRAID? To compare with TrueNAS
r
I did not. I did the quick google compare of the two. I found the TrueNAS community to be much better for "support" issues. The platform also seemed more Robust than Unraid. I by no means did a deep dive. I have been using TrueNAS for around 3 years now and i'm quite happy with it. 18TB RAIDz2 rebuild with 6 drives took only 21 hours.
Contrast to that. Here's a current RAIDz2 22TB 12 drive rebuild I have going on the QNAP platform... What a joke. scan: resilver in progress since Thu Feb 27 145922 2025 22.2T scanned at 34.0M/s, 18.9T issued at 28.9M/s, 230T total 1.52T resilvered, 8.21% done, 88 days 151119 to go
