i am creating a RDS Farm for a client thats looking to replace their Citrix. i am able to publish remote apps but not publish desktop. Anyone know how i publish a full desktop? is it just selection Remote Desktop in the remote app menu? I tried it and then it prompts me for a server name...how do i automate it so users can automatically go into the remote desktop in the collection?
s
A collection can either be Remote Desktop, or Remote App, so if you create a new collection without publishing remote apps it should default to being a published desktop.
There is a channel for RDS here btw: https://worldofeuc.slack.com/archives/CKJAHDGN9
n
can the same servers be used in 2 different collections?
k
No, when a server is assigned to a collection, it cannot be a part of any other collections
n
That sucks
k
Yeah, RDS doesn't have the same flexibility as CVAD. However, it is possible to work around the shortcomings
n
Why not go with Parallels RAS? Much simpler and quicker to deploy.
k
...but also has an additional license cost 🙂
n
yes, but totally worth it IMO. they are really cheap
n
@Nick Casagrande - they don't want to pay the money..they are doing Nerdio with AVD instead...the rds farm is for their legacy apps.
k
Why are the legacy apps not in AVD?
Are we talking RDS 2012 R2?

Servers CAN server both RemoteApps AND Desktops out of the same collection. It is a registry setting on the broker that enables that.
n
@Cláudio Rodrigues - i haven't seen any information on that. can you send me the reg key or a link that details that.
c
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\CentralPublishedResources\PublishedFarms\<collection>\RemoteDesktops\<collection>\ShowInPortal
Do this on the BROKER. If you ever TOUCH a collection to change settings, this will be overwritten. So save the key to the desktop and reload it every time you touch a collection. Or check this LOL https://github.com/Bottswana/RemoteAppDesktopMonitor
