Well, my string of flawless upgrades finally was finally brought to a fiery end with 2402 CU1! We upgraded the first controller and it failed after database upgrade. Studio won't start anymore with an error stating all services have not been configured. Looks like this would be Citrix Machine Creation Services which is not running. The eventlog tells me: Service start-up failed with : System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at Citrix.MachineCreation.Logic.MachineCreationLogic.ResetEnabledFeatures() at Citrix.MachineCreation.Logic.MachineCreationLogic.IsEnabled(SiteFeature feature) at RemoteHCLClient.FeatureService.IsFeatureEnabled(String featureName) at Citrix.MachineCreation.Logic.MachineCreationLogic.InitializeRemoteHcl() at Citrix.MachineCreation.Logic.MachineCreationLogic.Initialize() at Citrix.Fma.Sdk.ServiceCore.ServiceRunner`1.InitializeService() at Citrix.Fma.Sdk.ServiceCore.ServiceRunner`1.RunStartupSequence() at Citrix.Fma.Sdk.ServiceCore.ServiceRunner`1.DoWork() at Citrix.Fma.Sdk.ServiceCore.ServiceRunner`1.DoWorkShell() and Google give me exactly one result: https://robinvanbruggen.nl/2021/10/citrix-studio-database-has-not-been-configured-for-the-citrix-machine-creation-service-service/ Unfortunately this does not help, neither does resetting all performance counters. Is there anybody else that has seen this problem or has pointers? So far the CVAD environment is still up, just running on only one controller and only accessible via Director

My 2203 LTSR to 2402 CU1 LTSR failed in similar fashion, basically nothing on the internet to find a solution. I've yet to find a solution. Reverted to a backup for now, haven't had time to dig into it again.

Troubleshooting: According to the register I should have these performance counters: Database Transactions/sec Database Transaction Errors/sec Database Avg. Transaction Time Database Avg. Transaction Time Base Database Connected Looking in Perfmon, I'm missing "Database Avg. Transaction Time Base"
Reset performance counters, also tried replacing them with sample from working machine. Still not fixed
ProcessMonitor also does not yield any further clues and I've got a WERfault dump from trying to start the machinecreationservice. We are slowly starting to think about doing a restore from backup :)
We tried installing machinecreationservices from different CVAD versions to see if those will start, 2203CU5 had same problem, 2411 gives a different error but won't start up either. Original version 1912LTSR CU8 would start but Studio still says we don't have machine services running. We are using PVS only so don't really care about MCS being a (slightly?) different version. Last thing before doing restore from backup we've tried 2411 CR install on one of de delivery controllers (the other is still on the original 1912LTSR version). The 2411 installation works, database upgrade also works but starting studio still complains about machine creation services not running (which it is not). However looking in Director we see we are now redundant again although on different CVAD versions on both delivery controllers. Monday we can talk to Citrix support again, since our environment is still up this was not a PRIO1 call unfortunately.
With help from Citrix support the problem was fixed. The problem indeed was in the performance counters. For the .NET Data Provider for SqlServer:
unlodctr ".NET Data Provider for SqlServer"
lodctr C:\Windows\INF\.NET Data Provider for SqlServer\_dataperfcounters_shared12_neutral.ini
For other .NET CLR counters:
unlodctr .NETFramework
lodctr C:\Windows\INF\.NETFramework\corperfmonsymbols.ini
For WF (System.Workflow) 4.0.0.0:
unlodctr "Windows Workflow Foundation 4.0.0.0"
lodctr C:\Windows\INF\Windows Workflow Foundation 4.0.0.0\PerfCounters.ini
