What's everyone's thoughts on 4-Way SMP (Quad Socket) hosts for VDI/EUC? I can't recall exactly, but I thought there was some guidance a few years back, to avoid 4-way and only go 2-way? I know there's the obvious: • Price of Quad Socket Servers • Slower clock speed • Balancing PCIe devices across 4 procs, instead of 2 (GPU's being the big one you'd want balanced) Thought I'd start a conversation and see where it goes...
In my mind, benefits of doing dual-proc, would be: 1. Balancing PCI-e Devices, such as NICs and GPUs across the CPUs would be easier. 2. Higher clock speeds 3. More hosts in Dual-Proc configs, losing a host is less detrimental. 4. Less users on a host, failure of a host isn't as painful 5. Easier to evacuate a host 6. Less opportunity for cross-NUMA data and communication

It’s been ages since I’ve seen quad socket configs for EUC, the failure domain alone makes it a questionable suggestion :)

Since the advent of multi-core, the advantages of quad socket have really declined. Additionally, what Sprint found was the loss of a quad socket host caused a much larger amount of users to re-login on the remaining hosts. The worst thing you can do to a host is login. So, they actually had an incident where one host failed. Everyone logged in again. This caused a short period of slowness, which caused other users to logout and back in again, prompting more slowness, and eventually bringing down their environment.

So, sometimes, it is better to have fewer users in a single failure point.
