I think I have the same issue last week. Do you use fslogix?
j
We don’t use FSLogix. VMware DEM (Flex) But it’s happening even with a local profile. Profile Management is not the matter.
h
Do you use applocker? We had similar symptoms with applocker on server is and had to adjust our applocker policy
j
No Applocker. If there „would“ be any other restriction it wouldn’t start working after the reboot.
s
not using app layering? What about any other security agents? Does sound kinda 'hook' related. you double checked the UVI/CTXhook reg keys are the same in the master and on the booted VDAs? I'd keep the thought that a reboot fixes it, think thats the key in troubleshooting/solving. Anything happening on that first boot, webview getting updated? other scheduled tasks?
j
Hey Steve! 🙂 No AL. No security agents. We striped it down to VDA and PVS only. It’s happening over the VM console as well. This eliminates UVI hooks.
s
what if you put the VDAs in the master OU, or another block inheritence OU? Does it happen to local profiles too?
j
Yes. Local Profile, No GPOs -> Issue persists Machine is not moved during/after installation
s
you tried no PVS, what about no VDA?
j
I can test it. But to be honest: What should the VDA break? This seems to be the only environment affected worldwide.
s
need to find root cause, and to do that, we need to isolate components.
a lot easier to say that when i'm not the one actually doing the work 🙂

broken start menu used to be a common issue with corrupt profiles. Does it happen wtih both local and domain account and after clearing local profile? That wouldnt explain Edge killing the machine though...
j
It happens with the local administrator which never has been logged into the machine before (deployment is automated). Fresh profile.
s
and the local admin account still uses teh vmware dex profiles? Can that be circumvented?
j
For the record: It’s happening without VDA as well.
Local admin is local profile. No profile Solution involved.
s
is windows built from scratch in your deployment, like laid down from an ISO or something similar?
j
We always build from scratch with a vanilla MS ISO. The iso is untouched since a long time. We apply the latest updates during the staging.
s
think you could obtain or build out separately an ISO that already has the patches baked in?
basically just use something more recent as the base
j
Could be worth trying. Will give you feedback on this. But it would not explain why the master is working and MCS targets having no issues.
s
thought you said it happens without PVS too
j
Yes but only when you capture a vhdx… This seams to break something.
The vhdx is affected of the broken startmenu and app crashes. One reboot and everything is working.
I would believe it, if haven’t seen with my own eyes. It’s totally strange.
s
yeah, def not an easy one
what version of PVS?
your using the imagingwizard to auto create the VHDX?
like the executable in an automated fashion
j
MS Support is the worst I have experienced in a long time. This will take years ☹️ I will give it a shot with a newer ISO. One of the later 1912 versions, don’t know the exact build for the moment. We have tried P2VS, Imaging Wizard, Disk2VHD -> it’s always the same problem.
