No, but I've been told by numerous people that you're going to get 10-20% less density on W10/11 MS compared to S19 MS.

Not yet but I'm curious to what others say.. I believe O365 is supported on Server 2022 now so we'll probably go that route..

Have done a few projects, shorts answer is yes. Make sure you are running an OS Optimizer, that does help.

Have WEM and I have ran the Citrix Optimizer, but it feels like 6-7 user is max on a 8cpu 32gb ram box, I could easily fit 12 on that on windows 2019

@Jonathan Pitre has a well define updated Citrix Optimizer XML file that go beyond the default on that Citrix has. It might give you a bump in the number of users. Let me find it for you.
d
thanks, but I have tried that one as well, still bad performance compare to windows 2019
r
Dang. Okay.
When you say it feels like you get half of the users. What exactly are you seeing in resources compared to 2019? Is it the same apps, and resources or close to the 2019 multi-session?
8cpu 32gb is good specs IMHO. Odd that 6-7 users are it
d
Everything is the same app wise, users are just complaning about lag, which they didnt before
Using MS Defender, and I think that one is using much more cpu compare to 2019, not sure if they added the EDR in win11 that 2019 didnt have
r
hmmm are you using Acclerated Networking?
d
yes, thats enabled on all vms, premium ssd disk 128gb
fileservers using stripped disk for higher iops, accelerated network enabled on them aswell
r
okay, so Defender may be a key point here. You probably have already checked AV exclusions and tune Defender according to MS VDI best practices correct?
d
have done that as well 😞
r
well dang 😞
Is it possible to disable defender and test to ensure that is what is happening?
d
I think that is the next step to test
r
I would if you can, it will let you know right away. on W10, I had to exclude this as well C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe the CPU would go nuts if I did not.
d
Just hard to test it in a good way, not so keen on disable AV in prod, but like always with testing need to put the same amount of load on it
j
Curious what series/size the VMs are?
d
D8ads_v5
r
@Daniel Viklund I totally understand your stance on that.
d
I have MsSense.exe and MsMpEng.exe as process exclusion
r
What EUC tools do you have to look at the resources?
d
do I need to put the whole path?
r
Not sure about the whole path. I did because of a couple blogs I found on the topic. @Nick Panaccio may have a better answer or @Leee Jeffries
l
Daniel - happy to help you with an Automai trial to implement some continuous monitoring if you are interested.

r
@Daniel Viklund I would def take Leee up on that.
l
I think you are spot on Ray.
πŸ‘ 2
d
yeah, I can try Automai, as long as it not a agent that use 50% cpu when enabled πŸ˜„
l
No agent at all ;-)
DM me your email or drop me a mail at ljeffries@automai.com
You'll need to run a windows server VM but it doesn't have to be large.
Standard D series should do it.

These were my Defender settings before I left:
πŸ’― 1
d
thanks, thats a lot of exclusion
n
You're running WEM, so I assume you're also using CPU management, which I'd recommend.
d
Yes, cpu management is enabled in WEM
and rds fair share thing is disabled via gpo
n
You're talking slow in general and not just slow at logon, right?
I ask because there are a few Defender items I found that you should do in the image in private mode before sealing, as opposed to GPO.
d
just slow, logon is good, sub 20sec
n
okay
d
sorry to say, but customer using software that have license linked to each vm, so persistent VDAs
hopefully they are moving away from this version later this year, so I can switch to MCS and ephemeral disks
j
I would expect that density change. Server OS vs fat Client OS, that’s always been the way, or at least close to it - you have to optimise the crud out of the images to bring them down, Citrix optimiser only does so much… @Dave Brett close to your heart much πŸ˜‚??
d
Er, yes @James Kindon - keep an eye for an upcoming post on the exact topic 😁

Currently running Windows 10 D8as_v4 and D8as_v5 VMs on AVD for a customer, with ~12 users per VM. Appears to be running comfortably
Will be looking to see if we can push that to 14 users
d
@Aaron Parker full desktop, with full office and teams and chrome/edge ? I think our limit is 8-9 after that d8ads_v5 is at its limit
a
Yeah. Maybe these people don’t do much work ;)
