Yeah I don’t agree with the guidance there at all - it’s been dumbed down without real logic or justification. Do what makes sense per customer - probably written by those who have never implemented it in the field :-)

b
totally agree with your opinion 🙌
k
The well know phrase "It depends.." probably applies here
Use ODFC if it makes sense and fits your needs, otherwise keep it simple with Profile Container
b
Maybe I'm missing certain technical points, that's why I started this thread. IMO splitting up often makes sense.
k
There is a bit more context in this Youtube video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvBiLj7oAG4

He mentions that one reason to split up the Profile data and ODFC data could be if you want to backup the Profile data/container, but not the cached ODFC data. The cached ODFC data is IMO not essential, as it basically just syncs down again if needed.
j
Three reasons to split - different storage tiers, saving space on replicated data, or being able to reset the cache independently of the rest of the profile

That video leaves some things to be desired
⤴️ 3
Agreed on the above
k
The Azure Academy videos often leaves things to be desired. But in this case if provides a bit more context around the ODFC recommendations
b
What concerns me more is Microsoft's official recommendation not to use a dual container configuration. Even if this solution makes sense based on the needs of the customer, it can be harder to justify this.
j
Just ignore what MS say, they have no real world experience most of the time. Some of the big hitters from FSLogix have moved on to different business units
b
hahahaha love it
j
Half of them can’t spell it. Even in the video there is a lack of actual facts around what fslogix was for initially - so yeah - ignore it

I spoke to one MS engineer who told me I needed to "speak to this vendor, FSLogix, that's where the issue lies". He was quite shocked to find they actually own it

@James Rankin same here when I had the misfortune of opening a case. The support person said that they learn something new every day. I guess that's what I'm here for.

Hello guys, I totally agree with you. And most often it makes sense to split profile and office data. BUT as a solution architect (and consultant) I worry that at the end of the day Microsoft/FSLOGIX will sit back and relax if something breaks in a dual container solution. And worse customers might start questioning my design decisions against Microsoft tips. I've learned that by placing tips engineering often wants to nudge us away from solutions they don't want to support in the future.PLS someone from Microsoft explain why this tip exists and what to expect if we don't follow this tip.
j
They can nudge all they want, as long as the policy exists they have to support it. They don't want to support it, they will have to deprecate it. And then I will just move everyone to UPM Containers instead
👍 1
If I had a pound every time someone had tried to show me some "MS design tip" that went against my recommendations I'd be retired by now. The "tips" are just there because they're idiots who don't understand their own product in the field
<rant off>
j
Exactly, if they don’t want people using it then they should remove the capability from the product.
j
Just another nail in the coffin really. I miss the days of fslogix being fslogix
j
UPM all the way now man 🙂 I should have a video on my YouTube channel soon about me bigging it up
👀 5
j
Yeah feel is the same here. Had a good run, but lost its mojo and UPM team are so damn good and willing to build - makes it hard to ignore

If it wasn't for that video I wouldn't have spotted the Microsoft official advice had changed... it's very hard to deal with customers when they have official MS advice to refer to so not sure where that leaves folks...
j
And add in support issues. CPM/UPM getting better and better!
a
It won’t be an issue for Outlook much longer. OST files will be no more soon (for M365 customers at least)
🙌 1
j
So no more local cache?
b
Online mode for all?
j
My trade floor will go ballistic about working in online mode only, no matter how reliable it is
a
I have no cache on my machine at the moment where I’m using the Outlook preview. Offline support is coming (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/getting-started-with-the-new-outlook-for-windows-656bb8d9-5a60-49b2-a98b-ba7822bc7627), but given it’s effectively a wrapper for the web app, I would think switching b/w offline and online mode should be a better experience. What it should mean though is that cached mode shouldn’t be needed for performance reasons

j
Gotcha
n
@James Rankin Can the traders use OWA and ditch the outlook fat client? I'm slowly getting my users to convert over, Outlook is evil!
Coming soon to FSL release notes. ODFC has been deprecated, lol
j
They will freak because they always think that anything online carries inherent risk. But we can probably get them there in about ten years
ODFC deprecated? over to UPM then 🙂
n
Does CPM offer to split them? I can't remember / haven't played with it in a long time since it's release
j
You can put the OST, OneDrive, Search into a VHD, you can also add your own list of folders as well
⤴️ 1
n
ah ok, so kinda like odfc. i personally like the one profile container approach, that works for us, but "it depends"
When I tell people to switch over to OWA they're in shock and awe about how their email is in a web browser and not the Outlook they've been using for 30 years. I respond with, "Your personal email is on the web too, gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc" And then I hear crickets as they realize their argument is defunct.
k
@Aaron Parker do you know if the new Outlook app able to handle the "classic" Outlook add-ins?
n
no add-in's here thank God
j
Just give them OWA as PWA. Boom! Problem solved… 🤣
n
What's PWA? Too many TLAs in our industry (three letter acronyms)
j
“Install this site as an app option”
In your browser
b
Over/under 3 years there will be no more Office to install
j
PWA = progressive web app
k
I have some customers who are using multiple add-ins, some are still using 32-bit add-ins
a
@Kasper Johansen I doubt it
😕 1
n
we have tons of excel books with vba / odbc code to download and massage data from our erp. not doing that on the web....
d
another thing i noticed in his video was regarding teams redirections..he said teams only supports two redirections but I'm using @James Kindon xml and there are 9 redirections for Teams. anyone else ever hear of that?
k
@Danny I think it's the MS supported redirections that are mentioned in the video
