Updated to the latest 2.50 Canon Generic UFR II driver. Didn't help.

Another thing I discovered today is that the spooler has to be running on the delivery controller, otherwise Studio complains it can't get the printer settings when you try to add a queue to a policy. I had stopped and disabled it everywhere I didn't think it was needed when PrintNightmare raised its head.

Yes I saw this in my test environment after I installed the August updates.  I believe this is the issue: _Updates the default installation privilege requirement so that you must be an administrator to install drivers when using <https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/print/introduction-to-point-and-print|Point and Print>._ So in my environment I think what is happening is when WEM is mapping the printers the driver on the print server is one that I don't have in my image and now users no longer have the permission to fall back on point and print.  I havent tested that theory yet as I just noticed this yesterday afternoon.

So I did some more testing <@U01NDQN63GX> and can confirm am having the exact same issue.  This specific device I've done my testing with is an HP not a Canon though.  Driver is installed on the VDA but without setting RestrictDriverInstallationToAdministrators to 0 it will not work and users will get this prompt.

Looks like it may be an issue when using unsigned drivers.

Some printer drivers seem to have dependency on OS-shipped ones (like using HP PCL  etc) - I've had same issue a month ago.  Patch Print Server, break VDA printing.  Odd one.

Even if drivers are excluded from MS Updates.

We have the same issue affecting win 10 machines after August patch.. baking in the drivers from the print servers into the VDA doesn’t seem to help. We have “Point and Print restrictions “ gpo set yo disabled so the prompt should not happen but we still see the prompt… very annoying. 

someone poked me regarding seeing similar results as everyone else here.  Thought i'd mention that one of my customers is all good after putting all the drivers in the MCS Master image.  Did confirm they are type 3 drivers.  Most were Toshiba.  Sounds kinda hit or miss.

I have tried putting all the drivers in the master image, the printers would map but the prompt to install the drivers would still show up to the user… I have seen people online suggesting setting RestrictDriverInstallationToAdministrators to 0 but surely doing that negates the purpose of the point and print patch? 

<@ULNKUS8F8> depending how many drivers you have, you could put them in the master image by logging-in as an admin user, and adding 1 queue for each driver, and accepting the driver install.  That should do it.

Hey Nathan - I did add them that’s not a problem. What I am saying is despite adding them, and despite the fact that printers then get mapped successfully, the user would still get prompted with the message above… 

OK cool, I was just focussing on that particular method, as I know that when I added the drivers through other methods I didn't have same success.

(again likely because of dependencies on OS-bundled stuff that shouldn't get updated when Windows Updates excludes drivers, but does anyway).

<@UV3TVUW0K> That is how we have always done it. Install the drivers into the template image as administrator. Worked fine up until the August patch. Now users are prompted to install them even though they are already there unless we set the RestrictDriverInstallationToAdministrators reg value.

Do we have any progression on this topic? I am seeing no other solution than setting the reg key to 0 and implementing point &amp; print restrictions when this is not already the case. It seems some drivers are built different than others.

Most scenarios won’t work with type 4 drivers dur to their limitations. Any other solutions you have heard of? 

Smells like a small push to manufacturers to build universal print compatible firmware :thinking_face:

I might have narrowed this down to just cross-OS between client and print server.  I wonder if MS have stuffed up the version matching when the OS differs (coz the drivers can differ too).  Seeing this issue on 2012 R2 client vs patched 2016 print server.  Seeing this issue on 2016 client vs 2019 print server.  Not 100% confirmed yet. 

Narrowed down to UNIDRV.DLL getting pulled from print server to RDSH.

Interesting <@ULJMUV893>. Whats weird about that is I have another DG that I have that I am specifying the max sessions in the load eval and that DG doesn't have the issue (exact same App Layering image). In this specific DG I don't have that set, only the cpu, mem, disk values.  What's even weirder is I was running a procmon trace today and happened to catch one while it happened.  I could see in the procmon trace my script adding the reg values back after they were deleted but it never recorded anything actually deleting the keys.  The only thing I can think of there is that whatever is removing them is running at a lower altitude than the procmon filter driver. :man-shrugging:

we weren't able to get to the root cause either.  And kept trying to use ControlUP to auto set VDA to MM if we saw # users jumpt to a certain number.  Tried setting VDA to delayed start.  The issue always corrected itself if the citrix desktop service got a restart.  Sometimes the problem would go away for a month or so too.  In the end, we just settled on applying a 'max number of users' to the whole citrix site.  And if specific DGs required a lower amount of users, we would hvae a higher pri policy.

our images are clean too, built via MDT.  Have multiple sites booting off same image and it happened to multiple sites...my guess is some type of bug in the VDA and a timing issue.

Yeah that's kind of what I'm thinking too. It seems to be user login triggered from what I can gather. Thanks for chiming in, gave me some ideas…

I don’t think it works like that. The only thing it offers is if the client download fails html5 will be offered. Now I’m not saying it can’t be done. But more around it’s not built around the requirements you need.
First think that comes to mind is a Netscaler epa check and if it doesnt meet the workspace requirement use html5. Maybe that is a option 

You need smart access/smart control setup and tinker around the epa scans . This is a guess though based on what you’re describing

I’m not able to scan endpoints as all of them are 3rd party companies. As I remember EPA require additional software on endpoint…

Clients have to install workspace to connect anyways, same with zoom hdx connectors, it’s a requirement of epa scan and it’s the same thing as installing workspace. So what’s the difference in telling them to install workspace vs having a epa install to help Maintain you environment requirements?

It was a PITA, I tried many variations of reg checks, file version checks etc. The main limitation of the size of the EPA expression character limit.

Having an issue with Outlook hanging at Processing when loading on a clean Windows profile.  If I close the Processing screen and relaunch Outlook in the same session, it starts right up.  Local Windows profiles, no UPM or fslogix in use but the .ost is redirected to a network path.  CVAD 1912 CU3 on 2016 Server.  I cannot repro the issue in an RDS session and if I add Outlook.exe to UviProcessExcludes and reboot the VDA, the problem appears to go away.  Seems like there could be a hooking issue involved.  I opened a case but figured I'd ask here while I'm waiting.

I did a series of blogs on mycugc about tracking metrics in Citrix. I'm also tracking profile size metrics (we're still using UPM) to make sure changes we make don't increase the sizes of user's profiles. I don't know how many of these methods translate to a cloud-deployment.

Since we have ControlUp Scoutbees I also track our "uptime".

I'm hoping we can update our licensing with CU so we can take advantage of some of their other tools. <@UVBEF2GQG> How do you like Scoutbees? We would have to implement it as an on-prem solution. Is it proactive enough for you? Does it do real-time checking and reporting? Auditing? I'm trying to get more info about from real-world use to get my administration on board.

<@U014GAQNQJK> The scoutbees solution is only available as a cloud hybrid solution as far as I know.  There is no on-prem only solution like there is with Insights as far as I know.  The scoutbees control pane is all in the cloud.  You can deploy an on-prem "scout" (agent) that can auth with your internal storefront and launch apps and sessions that way but the scout is still controlled behind the cloud control pane. The scout (wherever its installed) will need to communicate over 443 to the scoutbees web service.  Overall, I really like the product for what it is.  Its not a load or workflow simulator like LoginVSI is but for just testing whether your Citrix resources are available its excellent at.  Yes it does "real-time checking" in that you can configure it to login to your environment as often as every 5 min (depending on your licensing level).  It also does historical reporting so you can look back a custom time intervals and track changes in your login time or failures.  Again, how far back you go depends on your licensing level.  Here is a couple screenshots of the "scouts" I have configured in my environment. As you can see, I actually 4 failures in the last 2 days and that adjusts my "uptime" figure.  In this case not exactly an accurate representation as those failures were all to a single machine that the broker was sending the scout user to so most users were not affected but scoutbees alerted me to those failures by an email and a Teams webhook notification.

unless you have StoreFront installed on the same server as the delivery controller, I wouldn't expect any issues

Have a look at the configured DDCs in the VDA Settings/GPO/Registry. I've seen environments with mutiple DDCs where just one was configured on the VDAs for registration.

db upgrade is stuck at "Closing service database connections"

Did you figure it out? I've seen issues with upgrading databases, which was caused by configuration logging being enabled. So i've made it a habit to always deactivate configuration logging before upgrading db's

should just autocreate a new one...make sure that domain users has 'write' for this folder only, and that Creator Owner has full control on subfolders and files.

64GB RAM, EPYC 7571 with 8 vCPUs, gets us about 20-22 users per host with a standard workload (Office, Teams, etc.)

Thanks james i did think it was a bit odd as i had no issues in past doing this process and i have seen mcs master images where snapshots was removed and they didn't have any issues. I think i have managed to get round the issue of having to delete the snapshots on the master VM anyways. I have deleted the D:\ volume on the single disk then extended C:\ volume to 60GB with the free space.  I have then done some housekeeping on the data that was previously on D:\ and got it down to 5GB and then created a 20GB D:\ volume and copied the data back. Both volumes C:\ and D:\ now look good with % free space  so just running BIS-F and i will create a new snapshot and update the catalog.

Have pinged to get eyes on that one - has to be some sort of reason behind the madness but I’m not sure what it is :-)

hide and prevent access to local drives, disable run , disable help &amp; support, block cmd, disable taskmgr, disable clipboard and drive redirection, block mapping drives + few more i will check my polices but there is so many and everyone's will be different

Yes, you can mix and match versions of vda and DDC, so you should be able to run an older version of VDA

It's supported but obviously functionality will be limited as you will not have access to new features in newer versions etc, when the vda is stuck on an older version

double-check memory/cpu utilization on the DC's

check up time of domain controllers, check virtualization stack for performance issues if domain controllers are virtual , run a dcdiag on the domain controllers and check replication with repadmin you could also look at some AD perf mon counters ldap searches/sec ldap new connections/sec ntlm and kerbero authentications/sec

i would also check your AD sites and services and subnet objects are defined correctly (subnets linked to AD sites). You would see high authentication times if authentication is being performed by domain controllers not in the same location as the VDA's. You can check this on the VDA's doing a set via cmd or using the nltest command nltest /sc_query:<http://corp.com|corp.com> and nltest /dsgetsite

The client side optimization works great, you really should steer them towards that.  However, you probably have some people in here who have used BCR for it.

yeah I second the ZoomVDI HDX optimization. its amazing how good it performs. the only way we have seen to do this without the optimization is to use a GPU accelerated desktop...not that its a cheap fix haha

Even with a GPU, you’ll have the issue of jitter/latency. It’s just laws of physics where your data stream has to circle from the client to your virtual desktop and back. Offloading is a great way of preventing hairpinning. 

Hi - they don't want it installing, as it would encourage Zoom use in the organsation.  It is for joining external calls only via the browser.   Citrix ref it in a blog.

I wound up just using host to client url redirection for zoom.  I dont  have the VDI option, as only have virtual apps.  But at least if they are clicking in meetings from outlook, it opens zoom on their default local browser.

You can’t do sub folders because of how TLDs work with distributed. You could separate our shares. Is this a user or admin issue?

Also do users have multiple profiles? You could have a user TLD and then breakout different profile stores using the OS or profile version options.

it’s an admin thing, and it’s probably not even that big of a deal unless you’re trying to do things through windows explorer

Yes, we have it...its ok...You'll need to tune it though.  Cisco does maintain an exclusion list for Citrix.  But you'll also want exclusions for FSLogix and WEM if used.  If these are non-persistent machines then you'll want to disable TETRA and disable the network scanning driver. You actually need to remove the drivers for both when you install by using the /skiptetra 1 /skipdfc 1 install switches.  If you don't remove them at install, even if you disable both in policy it can still cause issues.  In your conviction modes you'll likely want to disable system process protection.  In our environment when we turned that on, CPU usage went through the roof.  You'll also want to turn off the client user interface option in your policies. On RDS machines there is a bug in which the tray icon (client user interface) can hang onto the session and prevent the server from releasing the profile.

I get why they are doing this, but was never a fan in the early days, and doesn't look like it's overly improved. Hence why I built a tool for self-service that, from a user facing point of view, does a whole lot more and provides for all use cases that I've come across. Their tool is limiting in it's offering, which may be okay for the use case they present, but they are very generic. I suspect that the development of this tool has been driven by the requirements of a major customer or two where this is all they wanted. In my opinion the tool needs to mature far beyond this for there to be a greater uptake. I'm interested in what others have to say.

Great feedback, thank you. We are not using SNow to its full potential, and I'm hoping something like this will open peoples' eyes to some of the functionality and features we're missing out on. We definitely do get calls about resetting sessions, so it might be useful for that. But, the sessions 'issue' should be going away soon, as we transition away from IE to Edge. I'm curious, what other things are included in your self-service tool?

Yeah, thats what I thought also, but exactly zero has changed in our environment, now today we have 6-8 desktops throw this error.

did the machines that run the VDA get updated by chance? Do they have Citrix Workspace?

<@U0125S0736V> it’s looking like the OS was upgraded to 21H1 which might have borked things.  Ripped out the VDA, ran cleanup until reinstalled.  Same behaviour

For us uninstalling VDA, running cleanup and re-installing worked. We had slightly diff behav though. Users just got black or gray screen and then disconnected.

One thing I would check are the event logs on the remote pc machines.

LAN or WAN connections? Usually the latency is too high. Check ICA RTT and latency in Citrix Director.  

I second the latency comment. Also happens if underlying disk is busy.

We've found that 300ms is the practical limit before latency degrades to a noticeable point where users are impacted. That being said, we've had users use sessions with higher, it's just not fun. You may get better performance in high latency environments by using UDP ICA or Adaptive Transport. It should be the default depending on the version you're using, but if you don't have UDP ports open it will fall back to TCP.

Is this thru a netscaler or direct connections? Keep in mind that UDP connections will use more bandwidth, so if you are in a high latency, low bandwidth scenario, there's not a ton of really good options besides adaptive transport combined with low bandwidth policies.

So, we're using Citrix Cloud. HDX Adaptive Transport is on, but we're in the process of testing disabling it, so that we can enable EDT and test whether using that will improve things. We're being asked to make sure Adaptive Transport is off, across the board, and enable Adaptive transport and Rendezvous for some test users, so that Citrix can enable EDT via the Gateway Service. My concern is disabling Adaptive Transport will impact our users while we test EDT/Adaptive Transport/Rendezvous.

I thought Adaptive transport is the same thing as EDT just citrix renamed EDT. We have not had much luck using udp over dedicated wan circuits yet, but it works great for direct internet gateway connections.

Also make sure you are on vda 2012 or higher if using edt with gateway service.

Also, do you use session reliability? If not, consider enabling it so you can use MTU discovery which helped us a good bit, but if I recall, udp over netscaler requires session reliability anyways.

Anyone updated offline cache db? I just upgraded and the logs on ddc's keep displaying Citrix High Availability messsages like this: The Citrix Broker Service successfully connected to the XenDesktop database. and others. Everything is functioning, but I am curious where these are coming from?

It's so bad that the Event Log basically stops recording events right before I see the freeze, and that gap lasts until I power cycle the VM.

Wait, that doesn't make sense. I excluded my Trend layer in one of my images and still had the issue. Back to the drawing board...

That sounds like what I see when the VHD disconnects...even if briefly.  Start menu breaks - I believe tile repository event errors corresponding?  You could repro really easily by logging on, diskmgmt, detatch &amp; reattach VHD just to see if you get same result.

I'll add that to my checklist. I went through and tested a dozen images with different app layers to see if it was a particular one, but the results are goofy. I actually think it may be the latest Windows Updates from my most recent layer, which I'm testing now.

It's looking like it was a corrupt OS layer in my image. Deleted the last 3 layers back to the Windows Update one, and then recreated them and I no longer see the issue.

thats what i'm trying to figure out......i used the:  update-brokernameache -machine command and that changed it to be a blank name now and thats where i'm stuck

get-brokerprivatedesktop..... shows the correct hostedmachinename,  blank for dnsname and the SID for MachineName. (checked DNS , AD and the hypervisor and they all have the correct name too)

i did already try the update-brokernamecache -machine command but it just cleared out the dns name so link seems to be somewhat broken yet.  however i CAN still power manage it from Studio so it must have the right link to the vm in the hypervisor (Nutanix in our case)

The eval/insider preview copy of Server 2022 worked nicely with the 2106 in my testing so I imagine the full release will as well

The 2106 VDA also works, but again it's probable not supported.

I am guessing that the 2109 VDA will support WS2022 and the 2112 VDA will support W11

Windows Server 2022 was released on 18th August 2021. That’s why I ask.  

Im remember the last Windows server releases 2016 and 2019, where Citrix made Day 1 support press releases and blog posts. Now it’s 5 days after release and I couldn’t find something official so I thought I ask here.

Day 1 support is a marketing gimmick, right? :wink:

Considering the WS2022 release date, I suspect Citrix will support it in 2109

Hmm....I didn't expect that. I am seeing some strange things with VDA 2106 and PVS target device software 2106 on WS2022
