Thanks Jarian. I looked at it but it isn't very specific, like the information for ESX/vCenter. And for PVS (CVAD Setup Wizard)  I apparently need a Run As Account but there are nothing specified in the provisioning doc.
I guess i need to do some trial and error with delegation in SCVMM.

Yes that a important question. You said no VDI used outside the network? So the clients machines say in the corporate lan? Depending on the answer will let me k ow what to say accurately next.

nope no single fqdn, when I meant VDI wont be used outside I meant that receiver is installed on the VDI's with accounts configured for the local lb storefront instances. its the receiver on the VDI's themselves that are generating the beacon traffic but the VDI's with receiver on will never be outside the network so theres no real need for them to do that. Clients can roam internally and externally however majority of clients use a browser to initiate a session so beacons not used too much for BYOD clients.
It would be nice if you could set beacons per-store or disable the beacon probing from the receiver side with a reg key or similiar.

Ok then update the beacon for extern to point to the intern vip DNS is using.

This is how it is supposed to work.

You VDI machines shouldn't never go outside. Either you have DNS messed up or your networking team has something else incorrect with routes ect.

Temp fixes
1. Trick host files (not ideal)
2. Wem task to delete the external beacon under HKCU\citrix. 

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Citrix\Receiver\SR\Store]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Citrix\Dazzle\Sites]

Find the beacon key for external delete that. Have them look for traffic.

3. Create a new store for internal only.

check the provisioning file and see where it's pointing people, that's where it gets the beacon from.

are you doing double hop ica? Like, are your VDIs poiting to your internal storefront for published apps or something?

Something with DNS and beacon not correct. It should never hit "external beacon" inside the double hop. IMO.

Thanks for the replies, I'm not quite sure that I'm outlining the issue properly.
So beacons are configured correctly DNS is working ok. This issue is that VDI's with receiver/workspace installed in them is doing beacon probing at all. Because we have SSO enabled and stores configured within the VDI's to launch xenapp resources from inside a VDI instance I know why its doing it, but the process is unnecessary within a VDI itself.
From what I can see receiver is pinging/contacting all 3 configured beacons at the same time so its not doing something sensible like probing the internal URL's and if getting no response then probing the external URL's.

So if we have the external beacons set to <http://ping.citrix.com|ping.citrix.com> and <http://google.com|google.com> for example the networks team are complaining that receiver is probing those resource at all.

What I would like to do is disable beacon probing entirely in receiver or getting receiver to assume its always inside the network on the VDI's.

As beacon probing is set at a storefront server level and not per store I cannot create dummy enteries there as the same storefront instances are utilised for external connectivity and internal load balancing

I'll probably just end up changing the hostfile on the VDI's to stop them hitting those locations but if there was a reg key solution or somthing that would have been handy.

LogoffCheckSysModules should work - I've used that for McAfee, Webroot and Symantec :wink:

That's basically what I've always heard about ControlUp, which is why I wanted to target their pricing. I did get what I needed, so it's in the hands of the penny pinchers now.

Really hope that Citrix and other vendors think bigger.  It's not like this will be the last health crisis, natural disaster, etc.  Heaven forbid the next Corona appears say April of 2020

I hope business keep people more remote after this crisis, it is good for the environment, for personal health and it makes people more flexible.

The bigger in my mind is accounting for the fact that extenuating circumstances happen and the promise of the cloud is ability to on demand capacity and consumption based pricing. However very few vendors, and again I state this is not just Citrix, allow true consumption pricing. With this non renewable license what happens if there is a natural disaster May 2021?  Bummer you bought one year and you can’t renew it. Buy more. There should be options for companies to burst beyond expected without having to commitment annually.  Could be something where there is a one month burst SKU. It could be priced 1.5x list price. Or do something like insurance companies and price the risk into the acquisition cost. If you trigger the clause then price goes up; don’t use it then you get a discount. 

I agree with you that this won’t be the last crisis and that a one year license may not be the answer. At Citrix we had lengthy meetings around this, we are learning to walk in this field as we go.. like everyone is learning right now. No one has ever experienced a shutdown of the world at this scale. I’m sure new models will arise out of this, this was a very big warning to the world. innovate to cope with crisis or else….

Ever since we discussed this internally and the blogs went out, discussion on the what next, is this the right thing, how can we do better and more are ongoing. Your burst suggestion is a good one. I’m taking that and will put that on the table with the right persons to see it.

Was only a matter of time; feature parity was already there between CVAD on-premises and CVAD Service.
I'm just curious how this will play out, I can't imagine the big companies all moving to Citrix Cloud, or at least it will take time.
Microsoft tried the same with Exchange/SharePoint Online, starting in 2011, and almost 9 years later, they're still stuck with the on-premises versions. That said, now is perhaps a different time in terms of adoption of the Cloud.

Personally, I'm not 100% sure of Citrix's ability to "cloud" just based on my limited use of EM and ShareFile services

So our preference is to keep things on prem

well, they're changing that, so that's good - but you can also read a lot of reports of instability on the Citrix Community forums

The stability issues are mostly the consoles in my opinion <@UL5TCSW3D> pipe up, I need cheering up.

Using the Cloud Studio reminds me of using the Dell OpenManage console from about 2005

Studio and WEM in the cloud are awful, and support is even worse when something needs to be fixed on the back end. They need to sort it out if they want people to treat it as a legitimate alternative to on prem or self managed cloud control plane. I’d only recommend it for small business that can afford the downtime. Enterprise customers typically don’t want to go half the day without access to the control plane. 

I've been on a long term CC project for the last 2.5 years with a large well know organisation. I've certainly seen Citrix Cloud come from a "wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy" to a "nearly there" solution. There are plenty of customers who are still on-prem friendly with a idea to possibly dip their toes in cloud workloads. Also for seasonal orgs and universities the ability to use the cloud when demand increases has always been a good selling point.
If they are going to force practically everybody down the Citrix Cloud route, that is fine but they will need respond like a service provider when issues/support tickets occur, which seems to happen way more in cloud than onprem even if it is Azures fault. Also they'll need to sort out costing to bring it inline with the onprem version.

Progress is unavoidable and to be encouraged but they are doing this in the same style of when they ended 6.5 and gave us all XA/XD7 without feature parity and maybe now during the current world climate is not the best PR decision to release this bit of news when other org's are offering services for free to assist.

My understanding is that RemotePC is not a random pool like with VDI.  You'd almost have to set that up as a random pool with no power management

I think the issue is that for some reason the option to allow everyone with access to DG is greyed out.

Not having one is why you have to explicitly assign if I remember correctly

Pretty sure you can do it from PowerShell (entitlement and assignment rules are independent from machine catalogs)

I noticed in our site that the PC assignment showed the name of the delivery group. We want to assign users to specific machines rather than make any machine accessible to them. So I have a little powershell script that renames the Published Remote PC name to the actual machine name.

Has anyone developed an automated way to upgrade MCS persistent VDAs?  I know the cleanup of the old prior to the new is prefered and the multiple reboots are an issue to get around.  I saw <@UM531NUFJ> suggested another forum check out the script at <https://www.mycugc.org/blogs/david-ott/2019/01/22/quickly-updating-persistent-mcs-vdas> to automate the whole process.  I have found that script ALMOST works fantastically except when it gets to the VDA install step it stops at the "Open File - Security Warning" prompt so I need to be quick and click Run and then it continues on (before the last reboot post vda install i see some powershell errors but it reboots too quick to read).  not sure to get around this so hoping someone has some advice here?

thanks guys! that did the trick! just had to do a bit of trial and error to WHERE in the script to put it so that it ran it just before the vda install (any higher in the list it would clear after one of the cleanup reboots

well for some reason no matter where i add it in so far it throws some PS errors at the step where it would launch the vda install and then reboots before i can screenshot it.  could this script be that sensitive that if you throw off the lines at all by adding new ones it messes that step up?

this may not have anything to do w/ the $env variable....i'm trying to run it w/out that now and was able to get a recording of the error and throwing an access denied error on the vda exe so i'll need to dig into that i guess

looks like i got it....i had to put it in line 153 since i believe any higher and that gets cleared with the multiple cleanup reboots that come before the vda install so this sets it JUST before it runs that exe.  thank you for your help!

Can you post a screenshot? Is there a GPU in the VDA?

There was, and I recalled HDX 3D Pro being automatically configured, so I turned off Hardware Encoding within the policy and it corrected it.... I dont need it anyways.

What GPU? There are some known issues in certain situations (grahpics policies) and in combination with a specific GPU.

for that specific issue, it is the NVIDIA Tesla T4 GPU - so not related

but we use Quadro's also and we have similar issues

I’m seeing black boxes appear briefly over the folder expansion icons in Windows File Manager (Windows Explorer).  VDI running Win 10 LTSC 2019, so build 1809, same as you both.  VDA 1912.

black boxes tend to have a different cause, like special mouse pointers, etc..

Depends on your apps though. This is optimised the best I can and uses WEM for GPP, drive mapping and printer mappings.

I’m running out of RAM before CPU as our users are heavy users of Chrome, so we’re only getting about 5-6 before it’s awful for anyone else

Again, depends on the apps. Some web apps are very heavy, other users just leave tons of tabs open. Have you tried the great suspenders extension

ad blocker or pi-hole is something that might help with browsers as well

In my experience with browsers WEM does okay but not great. They tend to have a lot of processes which means WEM is sometimes counterproductive. Also test though.

Max ~ 25 users with 6-8 vCPU, 32-48 GB and standard Office apps with Chrome or Edge. It the good old days with 2008 R2 and XA 6.5 we got easily 40 users and more. 

Ad-blocking and offloading/redirection all very good if you can do it (that article needs an update really)......we're way past the NT4 TSE days when you could cram thousands of users on each box, sadly

Slack, Teams, Chrome.......all of these modern apps seem very resource-intensive, along with Office365. I had eight tabs open recently in Chrome and *48* Chrome processes were active

Jep, I always use the following PS for setting the correct Desktop Name in SF for the User:

If I remember correctly it shows delivery group name by default.

Did that change in a newer release?  I have a 7.15 site that shows the actual desktop name and we didnt do anything to enable that.

I have my TRM doing some research for me too...if its DG then its DG and ill just communicate that out..

We use Remote PC and the published desktops retain the hostname of the endpoint, nothing needed to be set within Citrix. We are on 1909 currently, but it has been that way since we implemented Remote PC. I have seen computers drop back to the DG name if they are are removed from the DG manually and reregister themselves. Only way I could fix it was to remove the computer object completely from both the DG and MC and let it reregister, then it showed back up with its hostname.

Just like any other VDA pointing to cloud you point that VDA to the cloud connector. You would need Virtual Apps and Desktops Service license

My view, Citrux should be helping people out here. Providing a license for a few months that expires but matches the clients current entitlement.

That's against the EULA. There's a heavily discounted SKU specific to the coronavirus that's good for a year and nonrenewable for virtualization, and most NS platforms have burst licenses available.

A trial is not meant for production environments….you wouldn’t be able to get support for those users. as said before call a rep and get a good deal (until 31st)

It’s the same as Chrome, please check if you really need all the folders, I haven’t checked in detail yet but it works. It’s important that you set both settings in the GPO, it’s a combination of GPO settings and exclusions.

Understood, I am comparing again my Chrome polices, I need to check the GPO. Not familar with those 2 settings. But Thank you, It will get me going faster than researching all this one by one

Here is what I will be testing with. Ignore the Reg exclussion, This is me testing something that doesnt work.

Stange every time I add a exclusion. I get a temp profile. I remove it. Then things are good. Have no idea why at this point

Curious to know if i have some underlying character that is bad somewhere. hmm

Can I get a second pair of eyes on this? I keep getting  this Error when the redirections are applying (The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.)

Anyone else have an issue with HTML5 based connections (ie. workspace for chrome) w/ time zones being off?  since DST we've had the correct time passed through to our sessions but the time zone changes from the correct central time zone to indiana/east so it messes w/ outlook calendar invites

I did that without problem for both brokers and PVS

I did this and the guid changed and it was a nightmare for me. The delivery controllers broke. This was pertaining to a OS upgrade.

Yeah, I think that doc I sent you is really what you need. It's the only one I can find that references all of the technologies. They've done a decent job with supporting newer OS's and Citrix builds, IMO.
