It's coming. If it uses half the planet's energy or one half of one percent, it's coming. Now, it's not lost on me that I am a homesteader living on a farm, and my wife preserves and puts back food, we have root cellars and storm shelters, protection, solar, wind, and other things that make power outages seem like a random Thursday... the entire thing could implode and I don't think our daily life (aside from typing here like this) would be affected. Heck, I could still text over packet radio, so there's that. Anywho... instead of taking a collective "it all sucks, let's go live in a hole", we have the opportunity to not only take part in the building of what is next, but also to build the guard rails that go around it for protection (both in and out). I won't cast aspersions, but think of all the governments in the world. We're no saints over here. There are worse. Much worse. All the countries represented here that have both technical acuity and a conscience should be feeling the call to be active in speaking truth into this latest crazy we find ourselves in, not retreating with the "last known good" copy of things we like, and think that somehow the thing we ignored can't and won't fall into the wrong hands and be wielded in ways we neither agree with nor can defend against. I would've preferred he engage the product, and start to build into commits things that help guide Vim in better directions, letting the whole decide. Yeah, I'm one of the "slop" guys right now for a couple reasons. 1) I am not the developer pretty much any of you are. I'm a lowly sysadmin trying to learn, and building docs, tools, and utilities I need, and am using that as my tutor. 2) I'm asking questions and learning: "How did it do this?" "What can I learn from what is here?" "What needs to be tossed, and if so, what is the better route to replace it?" If we don't figure that out and try to add to the conversation, the conversation will still be had with or without us, and will happen to us nevertheless. Linux will pull it in. Windows and Mac will pull it in. If we make the what it pulls in better by way of injecting reason into the process, then I think we're serving everyone. If we stick our heads in the sand, fork the world and try and push out everything else, the tank that's coming will roll over us.
