Hello, currently we are merging our TESTING team to Development considering the fact at the end of every development testing is required and need to be end to end work by developer. So now as we are merging the test team . Q - Is it right to change the designation from Test engineer to Software engineer, doing so will sure impact the employee career path in long run as there will be change in designation. Is that change okay or what should be the ideal change process. as it going the impact the large group of employees. Senior to Junior level.

@Nidhin CK Merging of 2 teams does not required a designation change as the role is not being effected. merging is carried out only from the perspective of better outcome. Moreover, Qa professional do not normally carry a designation fo a Software Engineer as they are into testing and not into software engneering. I hope this helps. Internal merger of teams does not have to have any impact on anything.

Agree with @S M. Unless you're expecting your testing team to slowly also contribute to any part of development and be skilled at it, there is no need for a designation change. On a side note, I have seen some organisations use a common title but adding a suffix based on the role. For e.g. Software Engineer - Testing, Software Engineer - DevOps, etc.

@S M Yes agreed! merger doesn't impact till the time they are working on Test cases, now we are expanding there learning curve and into development & Testing, So is it ideal to change the designation considering the new skills which they will learn and in long run will it contradict having skills of developer .

@Nidhin CK Designating a new designation implies if they have beena ble to acquire new skills and are working full time using new skill sets, not until then. It;s like a trainee does not get redesignation letter unless he has completed his training and is good to go with the new role.

@Shivani Pande Thanks for the suggestion and make sense as the designation is line with the job done and not impacting the work or a blocker due to designation of one's core competency in Testing and Dev-ops .
