So I was just perusing substack notes from this new yakstack account I made, and it was... filled with culture war stuff from people I don't follow. lol. I did (accidentally) subscribe to one person's newsletter from that account, and I think substack is populating my notes feed with stuff from people who that one writer follows, though not certain. In either case I found it amusing in light of the whole "recommendation algos are bad/you should only see stuff that you opt into" stance from substack. I am genuinely interested to see how the situation there develops as notes grows in usage... I think substack is going to have some thorny issues to work through
The populate-the-notes-feed-with-people-i-don't-follow thing is another facepalm example of "advertising makes you optimize for engagement" being a dubious criticism--being a business makes you optimize for engagement. I can feel this coalescing into the first post for Yakstack

I’ve considered the launch of Substack Notes an apparent departure from what I believed to be their values. I have no problem with the platform, but I have no interest in it as well.

yeah... at least it'll hopefully put to rest the idea that ads and recommendation algos are the root problems with social media 😬
