Hi guys! Apologies for the next rookie question - is the
Makefile
deprecated?
e
We'd like to think so! 😃
Can you elaborate?
As an AI search suggested: Not officially deprecated, but discouraged for large-scale orchestration; Atmos is the recommended path for consistency and scalability
e
Yes, so make was where we cut our teeth. We pushed it to its limits.
The challenge is parameterization
And globals envs
Also makefiles themselves are confusing to new people: they look like code, but are first interpreted as templates before execution.

Thanks! So, if I understood correctly, we should start using workflows instead of Makefile, correct? CI/Docker/locally?

e
That is the sweet spot for atmos

Hi @Erik Osterman (Cloud Posse)! Thanks. What about the Geodesic + Dockerfile? Can we say it's been discouraged in favour of the
atmos toolchain
+
atmos workflos
?
e
Yes, that's the way we're moving
Many still do use geodesic, and we built devcontainer support into atmos.
But the main purpose was local reproducibility; that's mostly achieved with
atmos auth
and
atmos toolchain

I think Geodesic is now mostly useful for the case(s) where you don't want to or cannot install tools on the host. Maybe you have a locked down workstation or maybe you want to work from a Pod in a Kubernetes cluster, for example. I still use it out of habit.

Yes, and another interesting use-case possible: sandbox for running atmos with AI
