Brainstorm i did. The spacers for heptagon are interesting. The rest meh

Spacers are good – they’ll add rigidity to an otherwise kinda floppy structure.
Any thoughts on how to have this heptagon thing stand upright? I’m not super thrilled with having visible legs, unless they’re also arty in some way

I'll doodle on that, it's a good question how to make them nice. If they add width would be good too, and gives ppl space to stash things inside the frame

well, there’s the lean-to option, where it’s two heptagons that are leaning on each other in an inverted V… https://something-else-fun.slack.com/archives/C0168ATFXBL/p1595890898005500?thread_ts=1595879729.005000&cid=C0168ATFXBL
You can put some fun weird shit in the interheptagonal space
🧐 1
transheptagonal zone
The braces between them (not pictured) could be shelves? And you can put weird shit on the shelves?
💯 1
Btw I’m bringing my generator and chop saw for this. I think the angled cuts we need to do will be much easier with that
👍 1
With shelves. I dunno. I think I like it less than the two heptagons offset half a rotation…but this is more practical to build
Although I’m staring at it and it’s growing on me

This is good but can we bury the bottom of it so no one trips on the 2x4?

2x6! That’s all 2x6s
✔️ 1
and yes, buried of course
Sent that pic to Mack, her response was “I love it”
ideally something we can continue to build off of . Next chapter for that zone is to begin stairs or a step zone to improve safely getting down to the wata

"ideally you'll build a foundation for projects i haven't moved on in years" counterproposal: we build something that is nice and can be done in 1 day with no concrete!

Yeah totes. I’m fine buying some 2' long lagbolts or something.

lags into the ground there won't do much, but building a stable structure and letting it sit should work ok
s

square-country-13088

08/04/2020, 7:13 PM
I dunno, depends on the ground I think. have you tried out there?
I think the example of Renee’s string thing’s lag bolt is a poor one, because it’s attached to something that moves and vibrates constantly…and that just digs the bolt out.
c

cool-pizza-44770

Yeah, the 12" lags I've used went in during summer and were completely loose by spring. As I understand, it gets really deeply muddy with their 50 inches of rain or whatever

hm.
What if we put this thing on 4 bridge piers, 1 under each bottom corner of each heptagon? They’re the right size…
c

08/04/2020, 7:15 PM
For example, "The Lake" sign tripod thing. It had 1 then I added another 2 I think and they were all loose. There's also a sign on the far side of the lake I tried, where observatory trail splits off. Haven't checked it out.
Yeah piers are good. Also the u-posts work well. You really need the right tool to get them in, but Mack should have 2 now. (Gave her our old one). Then you're attaching to fence posts which is not very pro, but it'll work
s

square-country-13088

08/04/2020, 7:17 PM
yeah, u-posts are ugggly
let’s do bridge piers. I think digging holes for them is actually less work than pounding in U-posts. And they can be hidden.

seems really freaking easy……..

1 dig 3' deep holes (2? 4? i don't want to dig these holes) 2 requires 3hrs minimum dry time
s

square-country-13088

08/04/2020, 7:38 PM
Need to dig deep hole. Need gravel. Need to mix it. Need to fuck with adding water to right mixture (whatever that is)
I can see the pros for it, and I think it would be nice if it was a completely solid structure that you could push around and it wouldn’t fall down…..but it’s also soooo much work

climbable would be soo cool!! but really it's hot over there and no one likes to hang out on that hill. If we used concrete it'd be great to install 2 vertical posts that you can tie shade cloth to! Then that spot would almost be useful! But still. No lake access. Not really useful.
c

clean-army-21719

08/04/2020, 8:00 PM
🤷 that is my favorite spot for lake access. But ok no concrete. (BTW @cool-pizza-44770’s shadepole idea is one I would love to see at this site in the future)

Nope, piers are fine. Should @cool-pizza-44770 and Ana and I try to get them on the way up? Are we going to need to get lumber? Wait until Saturday AM?

Need to figure out lumber plan. I’m guessing first-thing-on-Saturday is what we need to do, but I’ll still need to call in that order the day before.
