@Sreeram Sharma your thoughts
Imho its a terrible idea as you would be overriding the session source of traffic

I won't suggest doing it. Although it will help you with tracking, while performing audits you'll have tons of variants of the same URLs due to the tags. And believe me it's a bit frustrating. Apart from tracking, no SEO benefit

Then how do you guys track internal links. Aren't itm parameters just a custom version of utm tags that one can create in Google Analytics? I read some post about them a few months ago and some organizations do that.
s
@Rakshit Soral Till date, I've implemented and used it only on 1 website😅. Most of the internal links report that I need ( Seo perspective) are from Screaming frog and Ahrefs webmasters and also search console
b
@Rakshit Soral Google advises against doing this. Atleast John Muller does. It's absolutely terrible to manage canonicals for Google and for you with this set up. According to him link authority can get distributed among utm and non utm urls, which can affect rankings. You might start seeing internally linked urls with utms as separate urls in the search console.

Definitely wouldn't recommend utm tags for internal links. If you'd like to track your internal links' performance, you can use the behavior flow report in GA
