Not sure if it’s for everyone but it depends totally on you. I began in marketing and in content and moved into inside sales which I really enjoyed and was able to see the true value of content. You could also make the move to CRO depending on how the company is structured.

From what I have seen, you should figure out what you are enjoying the most, whether it is sales, product, marketing (product marketing, content, perf/brand/comms, field marketing). The basics are you need to write well, be data driven and importantly curious as an internal skill. Depending on what you enjoy the most, the career gets verticalized. Simple paths : From Content , you can easily move to manage the Content Team or Product Marketing/Product team. From Content can also move to SEO and Perf Marketing. Having said this, at junior level Sales/Product/Marketing career paths are all open.

Being a generalist comes only after you have specialised in something. Pick a niche, go deep and become an expert. Later, you can zoom out and take up other marketing responsibilities (at a younger startup) - digital, partners, product etc
