@AI Evy We have a use case where one of our clients (an electric co-op) needs to detect when an inbound caller is AI-generated rather than a live human. They recently received 9 AI-generated calls from a single company attempting to set up new service accounts, and Florida law requires explicit human consent for new service contracts - so their live agents need to be alerted and the call transferred when AI is detected on the other end. We wanted to check whether Retell has any built-in capability to detect AI-generated callers on inbound calls, and if so, how that signal is surfaced (webhook event, dynamic variable, call metadata, etc.) and whether it can be used to trigger a conditional branch in the conversation flow to route to a transfer node. If there is no native detection, we'd also love to know if there's a recommended approach that works within Retell's inbound architecture.

Thanks for tagging me @Ins4ne. I'll look through relevant sources and get back to you shortly.
### Answer Based on the available documentation, Retell AI does not have a built-in capability to detect AI-generated callers on inbound calls. The documentation covers inbound call handling through the inbound webhook [(1) ]() , which allows you to dynamically configure calls by setting agent overrides, dynamic variables, and metadata when an inbound call arrives . The webhook receives information like
from_number
,
to_number
,
agent_id
, and
agent_version
, but there is no mention of AI caller detection signals or related metadata fields. For your use case, you would need to implement a custom detection solution outside of Retell's native features. Here's a potential approach within Retell's inbound architecture: Custom Implementation Approach: 1. **Inbound Webhook Integration**: Set up an inbound webhook URL at the phone number level [(1) ]() [(2) ]() . When a call arrives, your webhook endpoint receives the call details. 2. **External AI Detection Service**: Integrate a third-party AI voice detection service in your webhook handler to analyze the incoming call audio or behavioral patterns. 3. **Dynamic Variables for Routing**: Based on the detection result, return dynamic variables in your webhook response that indicate whether AI was detected [(1) ]() [(3) ]() . For example:
Copy code
json
{
  "call_inbound": {
    "dynamic_variables": {
      "caller_type": "ai_detected"
    }
  }
}
[(1) ]() 4. **Conversation Flow Conditional Logic**: Use the dynamic variable in your Conversation Flow to create a conditional branch that routes to a transfer node when
{{caller_type}}
equals "ai_detected" [(3) ]() . This approach leverages Retell's inbound webhook architecture [(1) ]() and dynamic variables system [(3) ]() to integrate external AI detection capabilities.

@AI Evy can voicemail detection feature detect if the user that is calling is an AI caller instead of a live human?
a
Thanks for the follow-up, @Ins4ne. I'll get back to you soon.
### Answer I don't have information indicating that Voicemail Detection can identify whether an inbound caller is an AI system rather than a live human. The available source only discusses Voicemail Detection in the context of identifying voicemail greetings (e.g., carrier default messages) so the AI agent can hang up appropriately [(1) ]() — it does not describe any capability for distinguishing AI-generated callers from humans. I could try to answer this generally based on my broader knowledge if that would help — let me know.
