@AI Evy While looking at the chat history on one of my workspaces. I noticed that there were several ongoing chats that have been ongoing for months. All of the chats were between the chat agent and my personal phone number. How can I end these chats? It is leading to issues with debugging an inbound chat agent since Retell thinks that the messages I am currently sending are for the chats that have been ongoing for months instead of creating a new chat in the chat history.

### Answer To address ongoing chats that have been open for months, you can configure your chat agent to automatically close chats after a period of inactivity using the
end_chat_after_silence_ms
parameter [(1) ]() . When creating or updating your chat agent, set
end_chat_after_silence_ms
to specify the duration (in milliseconds) after which a chat should automatically end due to user inactivity . For example, the default value is 3600000 milliseconds (1 hour) . You can also include an
auto_close_message
that will be sent to the user when the chat automatically closes . The default message is "Thank you for chatting. The conversation has ended." For your existing long-running chats, you may need to manually end them or adjust your agent configuration to prevent this issue going forward. The
end_chat_after_silence_ms
setting will help ensure that inactive chats don't remain open indefinitely and interfere with new debugging sessions.

@AI Evy I already prevented it from happening in the future, but how would I end the existing long-running chats manually?
a
### Answer Based on the available documentation, there isn't a specific API endpoint or method documented for manually ending existing ongoing chat sessions [(1) ]() [(2) ]() . However, there's a known issue similar to yours where chat sessions were not ending properly even after the configured timeout period [(3) ]() . In that case, the Retell AI team had to manually fix the affected chats on the backend after the issue was reported . I recommend reaching out to Retell AI support directly about your specific long-running chat sessions. Based on the similar case, they should be able to manually close those sessions for you on the backend . For future reference, the
end_chat_after_silence_ms
parameter you've already configured will prevent this from happening going forward [(1) ]() .

@AI Evy What exactly does the update deployment button do?
a
Thanks for the follow-up, @Goopa Snoops. I'll get back to you soon.
### Answer I don't have specific documentation about what the "update deployment" button does in the Retell AI interface based on the available sources. However, based on related information about agent deployments, when you make changes to an agent (such as updating prompts, configurations, or conversation flows) , those changes create a new version of the agent [(1) ]() [(2) ]() . The deployment process typically applies those changes so they become active for your live calls or chats [(3) ]() [(4) ]() . There have been some reported issues where changes weren't being reflected after deployment in conversation flows [(4) ]() , and occasional errors when trying to update agent versions through the web interface [(5) ]() , though retrying usually resolved those issues . For the most accurate information about what the "update deployment" button specifically does in your context, I'd recommend checking the [Documentation]() or reaching out to a [certified Retell partner]() . Would you like a general answer based on my knowledge instead?
