@AI Evy Can I have a two way conversation with call transfer where the AI basically tells the caller what the call is about and the person recieving transfer can say if they want to take the call or not?

Thanks for tagging me @katlovetom. I'll look through relevant sources and get back to you shortly.
### Answer Yes, you can achieve this using Retell AI's warm transfer feature. [(1) ]() [(2) ]() With warm transfer, the AI agent can deliver a whisper message privately to the receiving agent before connecting the caller. This message briefs the receiving agent about the call's context without the caller hearing it. However, based on the current documentation, the standard warm transfer flow doesn't explicitly support a conditional acceptance where the receiving agent can decline the transfer before it completes. [(1) ]() The warm transfer connects once a human is detected on the receiving end. What you can configure: - **Whisper message**: A private message spoken to the transfer target before connecting them to the original caller [(1) ]() [(2) ]() - **Three-way message**: A message spoken to both the transfer target and the original caller once the connection is established - **Human detection**: The agent checks if a human is present after the transfer target answers, and only connects the caller once a human is detected [(1) ]() - **Agent detection timeout**: Maximum time the AI will wait to determine whether the transfer target is human before marking the transfer as failed Workaround approach: To implement conditional acceptance, you could use the whisper message to brief the receiving agent, then have them press a key or speak a response that triggers the final connection. However, this would
require custom implementation beyond the standard warm transfer settings. [(3) ]() The key limitation is that once the receiving agent picks up and human detection succeeds, the transfer completes automatically. [(1) ]() There isn't a built-in "accept/decline" prompt in the current warm transfer configuration.

if someone answers but then ends the call before it is transferred would the AI transfer to nobody, or cancel the transfer

Thanks for the follow-up, @katlovetom. I'll get back to you soon.
### Answer If the receiving agent answers but hangs up before the transfer completes, the behavior depends on your warm transfer configuration: [(1) ]() With human detection enabled: The agent detection timeout determines the maximum time the AI will wait to verify a human is present. If the receiving agent hangs up during this detection period (before human detection succeeds) , the transfer will be marked as failed. [(2) ]() The caller is only connected if human detection succeeds within the configured timeframe. [(1) ]() Key point: The caller is connected only if human detection succeeds within the agent detection timeout. If the receiving agent disconnects before this verification completes, the transfer fails and the AI won't transfer to nobody—it will recognize the transfer as unsuccessful. [(2) ]() The default agent detection timeout is 30 seconds. [(1) ]() If the receiving agent answers and then immediately hangs up, human detection won't complete successfully, so the transfer will fail rather than connecting the caller to a dead line.
