02/09/2026, 9:34 PMring_duration_ms setting controls how long the call rings before being considered unanswered. [(1) ]()
You can configure this via the Update Voice Agent API:
javascript
const agentResponse = await client.agent.update('16b980523634a6dc504898cda492e939', {
ring_duration_ms: 30000,
}) ;
The default is 30 seconds (30000 ms) , but you can increase it to allow more time for the transfer target or recipient to answer—for example, 50 seconds would be 50000 ms. [(2) ]()
For inbound calls specifically, you can also increase the ring duration by using the inbound webhook and waiting on your server before sending back the response. [(3) ]()AI Evy

02/09/2026, 9:51 PMring_duration_ms parameter has a maximum allowed value of 90,000 ms (90 seconds) . [(1) ]()
The documentation states: "Default to 30000 (30 s) . Valid range is [5000, 90000]."
This means 90 seconds is the hard upper limit for ring duration in Retell AI, and you cannot configure it to ring longer than that through this setting.
For use cases requiring longer wait times, you might explore alternative approaches such as handling the timing logic on your server side via webhooks before returning the response, though this would depend on your specific implementation needs.AI Evy
