I have been applying for remote jobs for the past 1.5 months but no luck. Mostly on linkedin and angel. What are things really important for success? Open source or previous experience or something else
l
I have had no responses from LinkedIn and Angel.co Depending on what role you are applying for, you might have better results from: 1. hnhiring.me (or directly Hacker News) 2. Remotive 3. Stack Overflow Jobs The last time I job hunted, 2 years ago, applied at these sources. 30 applications resulted in 1 job offer. 2 years before that, when I first started remote job hunting, I applied to 120 93 companies in 1.5 months and had 6 job offers at a ratio of 24:1 Negligible open source experience, etc.

What I focused on: 1. Writing individual cover letters to each job posting. 2. Without fail applying to atleast 5 companies daily. 3. Reduce your resume to being just 1 page. Hope this helps @handsome-nail-74866

Wow. Saurabh, you sure are an expert at this... 5 companies daily for a month. 👏
l
I maintained a Google sheet of every company I applied to with details on when they got back (if at all), what stage did I reach, etc.

Keeps you motivated. I think it makes sense. So numbers I quoted earlier were incorrect. It was 93 applications, 4 offers, 64 non-replies. I hope this helps.

I didn't keep sweet stats like this but my job search lasted a couple of months and was tons of applications. I definitely think it's mostly a numbers game. There's some overlap in these but I'd still check them all every day. Woow. so much cool info here. Starred @loud-glass-33663 and @billions-motherboard-33160 message. will surely be useful. @loud-glass-33663 I love the last bit of insight. 24 companies - 1 offer, 4 companies - 1 reply. Dude please write a blog on this. Will surely be helpful for many

Thanks helps a lot. @loud-glass-33663 I have been not writing cover letters for any of the companies and being lazy. Will start writing
l
Yep @handsome-nail-74866 A good cover letter is by far the most important thing you can do to stand out from the other hundreds of people who are applying. If you write it well, it shows that you care. And don't be disheartened if you don't hear back after applying. It was not a good fit. Your job is to keep applying - and applying well. Rest, is not in your hands. 7/10 companies will not respond back to you. (even with a rejection)
a
Just out of curiosity and interest - @loud-glass-33663 could you send a sample cover that you sent when you applied? so we get the gist. Maybe sensitive portions stripped
l
@adorable-musician-78571 I'll try to anonymize one which does not look very embarrassing and share. Generally cover letters tend to be a reflection of you as a person, so the way I approach it might be very different from what you do. However, let me dig in a bit and see. Just read a few of them and they sound extremely embarrassing to me 😛
a
hahaha, cool, 👍
s
Thats the simple truth of evolution @loud-glass-33663. You always tend to look back and feel embarassed! 🙂

@loud-glass-33663 yes a cover letter would help quite. Since we see a lot of resumes but very few cover letters
s
Great stuff already here. I would put one thing out there - focus on employer's needs and business problems much much more than your skillsets/experience - the more value you add, the faster you get hired. In interviews, use the Briefcase technique (ramit sethi - google/youtube it) and check out his dream job material on his website Quite similar and more intense than @loud-glass-33663’s approach I believe Personally used briefcase technique to get a job and convert big clients

Adding to remote job boards… (might be an overlap) https://twitter.com/lukejones/status/1099003995396427776?s=20
