Anyone thinking about starting a tech co-op or working for one? Would love to connect!

Sorry for the noob question, but what exactly is a tech co-op?

A co-operative. It's like a farming or a milk co-operative, but for software devs or technologists. Everyone is an equal partner and (I am not completely sure about this but ...) the technologist gets a basic salary and gets a percentage of the profits from the project or client that he worked with. But I'd like to hear a more accurate version of what's a co-op from @millions-barista-62156

@faint-energy-11966 Essentially the business is owned by workers and decision making is collective. For example Nilenso is the only tech co-op in the county that I'm aware of. https://nilenso.com/decisions/bdr002-nilenso-is-a-coop.html

Wow! An all remote tech co-op would be a brilliant idea!
m
Yup! We need more co-ops and more experiments with alt organisation models.

Keep me posted about this. Sounds like an org I'd love to be a part of.

@millions-barista-62156 Have you looked at DAOs? I think DAOs will make it easier to start a tech co-op or any other collective based on a common goal, interest 🔮
m
@calm-grass-85557 I have. But the DAO comes later. First we need people who want to come together to do something. I think the framework/tools to manage and run the org can come later.

@millions-barista-62156 True, this is a very different paradigm of working. You are an equal owner, and so with great power comes great responsibility 🕸️ . I realised (from the nilenso blog) that people that come together also need to be open to an organization that will experiment with everything.
m
True. Most initial members of Nilenso themselves have moved on from the org. But the interesting bit is that it has survived and has allowed other to come in and be an equal ‘owner’. I’m personally interested to run more such org experiments. I think it’s just more empowering for everyone to be part of collective decision making process. If democracy is a good experiment to manage a billion people I’m surprised our orgs aren’t run that way.

Hey! This sounds interesting and something I am definitely interested in! Please keep posted.

Wow. Is there anyone here who has worked or is currently working at Nilenso? I love their model and would like to explore if we can work together. Thx
