Anyone using MacBook Pro 13" with 16 Gb ram for development? I'm planning to get one, before that I wanted to know if anyone has experience with it(good or bad). I want to use it for backend dev, mainly containers and Kubernetes related.
p
I have a MacPro 13" M1 with 16GB. I am using it for dev and it is great. I had to install rosetta and works for me.
b
hey @polite-secretary-64403 thanks for the reply. Does it perform well when you open the multiple browser tabs and windows especially chrome and doing some other multitasking as well?
Do you do any containers related work on it, like running multiple docker containers or running KIND?
p
I am not using containers or Kubernetes. But I have like 30 to 40 tabs open mostly and it doesn’t hang. I still haven’t felt any lag yet.

@best-computer-49066 I am a backend dev too. I am also planning to get a 16 GB M1 pro. not sure if docker and kubernetes are well supported. i've seen people complain about it when it comes to containers KIND.
maybe i'll wait for september release
b
The release I heard is in November and I'm not at liberty to wait till then. And the docker released there GA for apple silicon that I've seen. But I'm not so confident about compatibility of all the backend tools. But I'm more concern is 16Gb ram, if it's enough.
s
yeah, go for 16GB. i know a friend who bought 8GB M1 Mini. he told me to go for 16 if possible.

Im a backend dev with main tech stack as python and postgres. Clojure (java and the jvm) for side projects. Docker works well only if the images you're using have the arm64 variants. Otherwise, you might run into weird issues. For instance, many of the postgres extensions don't have arm64 packages and I have seen weird threading issues. For all other things, the experience has been quite amazing. The responsiveness is amazing, fan barely turns on and the battery life is out of this world.
b
Yeah even in youtube videos they say the fan doesn't turn on easily.
Thanks @polite-secretary-64403 @swift-london-82344 and @bumpy-yacht-16235 I feel a bit more confident for this purchase now.

@polite-secretary-64403 and @bumpy-yacht-16235 Do you use any usb-c hub with your M1 MacBook?
p
b
Okay.

This is much better than Apple's adapter for about the same price CADYCE Dual USB-C™ Dual HDMI Docking Station (CA-2CHD2) https://www.amazon.in/dp/B08W2F82S8/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_634Z0F28N8G47NG9F2Y1
Also K8s is best done on Linux. If you're already a Mac user, you can stick to Mac & get one of those 16GB M1 Macs and probably use a free VM on the cloud. You can get powerful arm based cpu VMs for cheap or free - and kubernetes is now supported on arm!
b
Hey thanks @better-planet-65329 and I’m very sorry for late reply.
b
@best-computer-49066 I'd say avoid the cheaper hubs and go for the original one by apple: https://www.theverge.com/2021/2/25/22301846/apple-macos-update-prevent-third-party-dongle-dock-damage @polite-secretary-64403 do you connect another USB hub in the usb port of the apple adapter?
Also keep in mind that most cheap hubs don't provide 4k @ 60hz, only 4k @ 30hz
I purchased the M1 air 16gb from apple.com shop last week! I was skeptical at first, but the delivery was smooth!
s
@bulky-london-83323 did they deliver it in a week?
b
Yup got it in 9 days! It was shipped from Singapore to Mumbai via DHL then Blue dart for delivery till house!
p
@bulky-london-83323 - I got the apple adapter was too worried to risk using something that wont work or create trouble later.
b
Same here but I mean do you have another hub daisy chained for more USB ports? I can't live with a single usb port 🙈
b
Currently I’m using Belkin's dock which is working really well for me. It comes with ethernet port which was priority for me, and its working great so far.
But I’m not supplying power through the dock, you see it only need one usb-c port on MBP so another one is free for power supply. Just to avoid any power delivery issue/damage through docks.

Yup that's good! Only issue I have with it is that it doesnt support 4k@60hz 🙈 I'll mostly be purchasing the the Apple official one
