Edward Snowden speaks on Apple's recent decision to scan on-device images. I suppose this is a sensitive topic so many here will be hesitant to participate in this discussion. But I consider it important enough to share nonetheless. https://mobile.twitter.com/Snowden/status/1423469854347169798?s=09
If these tweets are not appropriate for this channel due to Snowden's language in the tweets, please let me know and I'll remove the post.

Apple's decision is gaining lots of reaction - which I guess is good ? Maybe they will want to reconsider it, or next time push it more "quietly". Even Will Cathcart, who heads WhatsApp at Facebook directly talked about this and why it a concern - Facebook may not be the best organization to talk about "privacy" but who knows this will create enough pressure on Apple. Unlike most of the mobile products in market, the premium pricing of Apple devices would make one thing Apple is making enough per device to go out of way to compromise their user's privacy, but one is only left wondering when despite all this they still do something like this, and have been making questionable decisions in the past as well. All this when I was seriously consider switching to iPhone, purely because of privacy reason 🙂

Mr. Green said he worried that such a system could be abused because it showed law enforcement and governments that Apple now had a way to flag certain content on a phone while maintaining its encryption. Apple has previously argued to the authorities that encryption prevents it from retrieving certain data.
“What happens when other governments ask Apple to use this for other purposes?” Mr. Green asked. “What’s Apple going to say?”
Mr. Neuenschwander dismissed those concerns, saying that safeguards are in place to prevent abuse of the system and that Apple would reject any such demands from a government.
“We will inform them that we did not build the thing they’re thinking of,” he said.
This is such a stupid argument. They literally bow down to the chinese government's censorship requirements. None of their privacy focused tools such as Apple Relay are available in China. What makes them think that tyrannical governments won't force them to report matches against their own personal databases?
I was planning to switch to iPhone too. But for now, it seems getting a decend Android phone and flashing Lineage or other custom ROMs is the way to go.

My current Android device had an OEM implemented feature for "permission spoofing", for annoying apps which won't work without certain sensitive permissions like contacts and SMS, you can spoof the permission so that even when they are given these permissions, they can never actually read SMS and call log, for example. But recently in the OTA update, the vendor removed such a nice feature and their argument was that Android 11 terms do not allow them to have such feature in phones they sell with Android. Does anyone know of Android device or customROM that comes with a similar permission spoofing feature? It was super helpful feature.

I am aware of Island and Shelter. Both of them require work profile. I have an active work profile, so haven't been able to try them.

@bumpy-salesmen-84988 which phone is that?

@bumpy-salesmen-84988 - I can see that you are privacy conscious (i have not been, mostly lazy) - so why do you have work profile on your main (personal) phone and not a separate phone? Wouldn’t that be the first step?
