Hi #tribe, I am transitioning to remote work soon and wanted to know if there are any laptops available with 64GB RAM. I recently bough Dell Precision 3561 with 64GB RAM, but it has sleep disabled from BIOS so I always have to switch off the laptop after working. That is a big bummer for me. The work I do requires a lot of processing, hence the high RAM requirement. Primary usage will be on Linux (Ubuntu or Fedora) hence Linux support is a must. GPU is not needed at all. Newer Dell models seem a big no due to the sleep problem and no viable fix in sight and I couldn't find a 64GB RAM model without a GPU. Do you guys have any suggestion? Thanks!

Last i checked, it supported S3 suspend and Linux.

Thanks, do you know how much time it takes for delivery in real life (or have you ever bought it)? On website it shows 12 weeks.

I open chrome as well sometimes. Have you ever considered running your workload on a cloud VM/ dedicated machine from hetzner?

Well I was in a similar situation re. the sleep issue, just started using hibernate. Any reason to not use that. Adds a few seconds to the boot process but I am way more happy than using the unreliable sleep. I pretty much use the laptop as a workstation and its always On and I only turn it off when I need to take it around

in this case 64GB RAM 🙂 (increases time to hibernate/resume and also wears out the disk eg.SSD)

pretty much it will take that long. For instant delivery, you can visit your local Lenovo outlet/showroom. Certain models/configs might not be locally available and would still take a few days/weeks to be delivered.

@dry-monkey-93718 I work on Chromium and AOSP and it takes large amount of RAM. The problem is vim. I am lightning fast in my work and remote server slows me down as my key presses end up not in order almost all the time. Some people have suggested using vscode, but on vim I have written configs that works on many languages like C++/Kotlin/Go/Rust as these open source projects combine many languages and hence the problem.
@chilly-rocket-77832 Thanks for the reply, I think I will go with Dell in this case. I might have to live with this hibernation non-sense 😛

I swear the chrome thing was a "browser eats RAM when you visit google.com" joke. Had no idea you work on chromium. Now I will blame you every time my browser hogs memory. While you wait for your new laptop, try vim over ssh on a wired connection to a server within India. GCP Mumbai and Digital Ocean Bangalore have amazing pings. I think azure has one in Chennai? For AOSP, you might be better off building a desktop with high core count CPU? Maybe something like a threadripper or at least 5950x. Unless mobility is a big issue 😢

If I take a zonal server and if I travel then it soon becomes a problem. Productivity and efficiency is the main concern here. Since binaries for AOSP is around 1/2GB, building locally will help me save data as well when I travel. @dry-monkey-93718 I think as CVS said, confirming from local stores first about the delivery dates is the wisest choice here or else move to Dell.

Why not you give thought to mac studio...

Running linux on M1 isn't there yet.

Ok ...I recently got m1 mac .... slowly moving away from chrome and sublime and try to use vs code and edge .... seems incredible fast so far with 16gb ram....
