Anyone else experiencing degraded system performance after upgrading to Windows 11? 😕
m
nope
c
i've experienced more bsod in last 1 year than in the 10y before that.
f
Really depends on hardware you have, I have Ryzen 7 3700X + RTX 2060 Super, no issues since last ~1 year of usage.
m
BSODs are indicative of (possible) hardware failures or driver incompatibilities. You can use tools like WhoCrashed to determine what caused the BSOD https://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed
t
Mine actually improved
r
No performance issues here. I'm using the Insider beta (wanted access to the WSLg features quickly last summer) so had a few rare crashes, will be switching back to stable soon.
f
My system's performance is soo bad now, it feels like my SSD was replaced with a HDD.

I am not on Win11 and haven't used Windows in anger recently -- but, in my experience, doing a clean install can really bump up performance. I used to do this often when I was on Windows. Now, once a year, I format my macOS and reinstall from scratch -- really helps. (Can get a bit inconvenient setting up dev stuff again -- but long term performance >>> short term pain). (I am on an Intel MBP 16) So @faint-energy-11966, might be worth doing a clean install? (Especially if you simply upgraded from 10 -> 11)

The configs, dotfiles, ssh keys omg so many. Do you have any checklist that would be super helpful for anyone else who might be doing/planning to do this.

So a couple of things I have setup to make this seamless. Also makes it easy if your machine dies and you need to move to another machine. 1. Have all my SSH files, github keys, etc. backed up to a secondary source. (These rarely change). 2. If you maintain your AWS keys, that also gets backed up to the secondary source. 3. All my config files (OMZ config, etc) is also backed up to this secondary source. 4. Have all my license keys at one place for all the apps I use. (Evernote) -- If this is a scheduled reinstall -- 1. Backup my PGSQL data base so I don't have to put in dummy values again on reinstall. 2. Before formatting, I make a list of apps that I need to reinstall when I reinstall - that is again on Evernote. (I will update this list) 3. All my code & side-projects are anyways on a separate partition / drive which does not get formatted. But these are on Git online anyways. I also have TimeMachine backups every week - which I have used once to restore a new machine when I didn't have time to do a clean install. When I restore, I just copy paste all the keys back into the root folder and run my chmod or any commands. Then I start installing all the apps, etc. which takes a while. If you are on Windows, https://ninite.com/ should make things much easier. On Mac, https://macapps.link/en/ is good - but not as good as Ninite.

Thanks, super helpful. I use Mac too.
secondary source
in the above context, does it mean external hard drive or any cloud provider? (Just curious)

l
I'd rather not say 🤐 But its on the cloud. (also gets auto backed up on a hdd -- but I use the cloud one mostly).

dunno how much of the config is stored in
~
for mac, but you can keep a dotfile repo for configs
m
My SSH keys are always on my external storage, in my password manager (1Password) with another copy in Dropbox. All of my documents are saved in Google drive with another copy in One drive. Installing applications is a pain but ninite makes it easier.

On Windows 11, they’ve got winget which is better than Ninite/Chocolatey, it is basically Homebrew Cask for Windows. And you should be able to create a
.bat
file (and put it in your dotfiles repo) to get the automated install working. Regularly re-install Ubuntu and macOS led me to have a cross-platform dotfiles that can handle both these platforms https://github.com/kushalpandya/dotfiles

@clever-advantage-29037 The thread dates back to
April 17, 2021
, and having used Winget personally, it worked fine for me and covered all the apps I use (including some obscure ones like K-Lite Codec Pack, GOG Galaxy, etc)
c
the hn thread is more about MS ignoring the work of original creator (Keivan) and not even mentioning the core idea that was copied from him.
f
Of course, but it won’t stop MS from working on Winget, and community to publish their apps on Winget, and eventually users from using it. 🤷
