Are you going to pony up the $100 / year on Copilot? I have been using it for the past 6-8 months and recently, it essentially looked at my models and wrote the entire CRUD pages for me. It has come a long way and I find it very helpful. Wondering what other folks feel? (The OS code usage controversy not withstanding).

I am pretty sure gonna pay that $100, it definitely is saving me a lot of time by reducing lookups within my codebase and also on the internet.
m
Yes! Been using it for months now. Over the course of an year, copilot can save me a few hours/days of work. It pays itself off. PS: Of course, let's hope that my clients don't find out that I'm saving time with copilot. πŸ˜‰
e
I have been using it from the past 6 months as well.
f
I've been using it since beta launch too, and while it's good, I don't plan to pay for it. https://twitter.com/ReinH/status/1539626662274269185

I’m afraid of not being able to live without it so not gonna take the trial even πŸ˜‚

Did anyone try TabNine?
l
@flat-morning-91037 controversies not-withstanding. πŸ™ƒ I just signed up for the trial -- and it did have a dropdown asking you whether you want it to look at public code for your projects -- so maybe they may work on an option to turn it off. @powerful-planet-56851 They flipped the switch and it literally stopped working mid-work for me. Caused a bit of a panic. Not going to deny 😬 It really helps if you are learning a new language / framework. Can show the correct syntax instead of you having to look stuff up. @thousands-exabyte-97089 I did try Tabnine a few months ago while waiting for my Copilot invite to come through but it REALLY slowed down my IDE and did not provide me with enough value -- at that time. Maybe it has improved over time, but I haven't revisited it. Have you used TabNine? Would you recommend it?
Reading from their FAQs https://github.com/features/copilot

Thankfully got it for free as part of the OSS Maintainer provision I guess. πŸ™‚

Not tried yet but they recently launched new AI models for the code completion. We still have time for Copilot until August 22, may be I will try once it expires.

Definitely paying
f
I just checked, apparently I'm maintaining some public repo, not sure which one, but it qualified me for free. So I guess I'll continue to use it while it remains free.
g
It's really sketchy that they don't reveal which projects they consider to be "Popular" 😬
l
@glamorous-mouse-696 Can you share your Github handle? Will check out what they mean by popular πŸ˜‰
g
https://github.com/sidharthv96/ I'm pretty sure being the maintainer of https://github.com/mermaid-js is what got me in, as Github just added support to mermaid.
f
@glamorous-mouse-696 Nice to know you're maintaining Mermaid, will be sure to bother you in the future. πŸ˜„

@flat-morning-91037, I'm more focused on https://mermaid.live part of things for now, just started exploring the core diagram side recently.
f
Nice, whatever Mermaid ends up adding, GitLab would need to support it. πŸš€

@loud-glass-33663 what technology/framework do you use where it was able to auto create CRUD. Haven't seen that happen in my rails workflow or Vue.
l
@refined-psychiatrist-35519 I have just started learning python & django. It does not create all the files from scratch. I still need to create the HTML templates and add the first label + text input -- but post that, it is just a
tab
for all the other 20+ properties (1 at a time). Similarly for the views side of things. Creating basic views to add/update/delete basic objects. Has easily saved me like 30m just in one evening.

leaning towards paying it. my colleagues also got it very handy and now we are thinking if we can approach our company to reimburse it 🀞

They do have company plans coming later this year.

Makes sense

what telemetry does this thing collect on your own code? I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable using something like this to work on proprietary code.
g
There's an option to opt out of it scanning our code. But they scanned all code in GH without any permission anyway, so if your code is in GH, it might've already been scanned.
p
I was coding in ROR first time , copilot helped to complete it without hiccup . but when comes to day to day project in JS , I spent more time correcting the copilot recommendations. so not using day to day

Wow that’s amazing @glamorous-mouse-696!! Wish there’s more folks in open source from India!! Hard to find a community too lol

I tried using it but it became annoying after a point working with Java. Is there a proper way to use it?
