Slightly digressing from @able-xylophone-142’s suggestion. If you want to understand India you need to learn the history of India. Do read the book, “India After Gandhi” by Ramachandra Guha. I wish they taught this in school and not just about the struggle for independence.

I think his point was about understanding humans

@miniature-exabyte-51670 Here India means the culture, language and people. After reading the book, I am able to relate to the politicians and the public servants more. Putting history in perspective is able to explain to me about why some things are the way they are. (Examples: What happened between India vs Pakistan, How corruption started in the first place, Why the states are divided the way they were)
What was even more interesting to me (and we all take this for granted now) is that no one believed “Indian Union” is a good idea. A majority of people (from westerners to Indians) thought that India would disintegrate within 10 years of independence and independence for India was a joke.
