Hey guys, I want to know if there is any proper expense tracker app for a family. I currently track it using a personal google sheet with formula and other stuff to automatically track it in the categories but I need to enter the expenses manually. I tried Walnut and other apps but it doesnt track my transactions within my own bank accounts. Meaning I have 4 accounts 🀷 and emis in one, savings in other etc. So each time I transfer from one to another, it adds as expense and it doesnt look good as the credit in other bank is not taken into consideration. I hope I made it clear what my problem is, any suggestions guys? πŸ€”

I have been using Toshl since forever. (Not extremely happy with it β€” but using it out of compulsion). If you get Toshl Pro + Medici, they can look up transactions from your bank accounts. https://toshl.com/bank-connections/india/ I personally haven’t used it nor do I plan to - but they support most popular Indian banks.

I'm building a budget / expense management app. Will take this scenario in consideration. Planning to release beta early next month.

@loud-glass-33663 So we might need to link all our bank accounts to take into account. 😐 generally you dont have this problem of transferring from one bank to other? πŸ€”
@blue-australia-25873 πŸ‘ πŸ™Œ Do you plan to integrate with banks or upload mini statements or how does it work?
b
Right now, not integrating with the banks, uploading statements is the only option.
a
nice. i wanted to do it sometime back but was held up with stuff so couldnt. πŸ‘ which tech stack are you using?
l
@adorable-musician-78571 So I very rarely have stuff to do with my bank accounts. Only when I withdraw cash from ATM (1 time / month) and when I am transferring to friends via UPI (very rarely). 99% happen via CC. So the bank connection feature does not really affect me.
My biggest pain (for which, even I had started writing my own budget tracking tool) is to manually feed stuff in from my CC email alerts.
I was trying to solve this by actually writing a service to which I forward emails and which will then add it to my tracker automatically.

@adorable-musician-78571 I'm using react, redux, nodejs and MongoDB

@loud-glass-33663 I tried that too. and what @blue-australia-25873 is trying. To upload a statement at the end of month to automatically update it. But that becomes a pain when I want to check it mid month. My problem is multiplied because I have 4 bank accounts courtesy of each company I worked, and my wife has 1. so its difficult to track for all these accounts combined.
l
No @adorable-musician-78571 - I wasn’t talking about statements upload. Was talking about forwarding every transaction email I receive from my Credit Cards. I get multiple a day - and I now look at the email and feed data into Toshl
Try and see Toshl if it works for you. You need to give it your bank account password though and it will take care of it in real time
a
@loud-glass-33663 yes i understood that. I actually was trying to setup an auto rule on gmail that forwards all my transactions on the bank to another email which will receive and parse and convert that as transactions. I started it but couldnt see it through. I dont want to provide my bank account details anywhere. that too all my accounts. so was thinking
l
Yeah. Good point. Let me know if you end up writing the email forwarder thingy, I will not have to πŸ˜‰
a
πŸ‘ will try it after sometime. Have few other things on my plate. so lets see. I think for the basic setup, you can just use gmail filters but not sure how it works with Toshl

After several years of doing that, i realized that it's a bit better to track 'networth', so i've a google sheet with all the savings/fd/mf/stock ,, a new column is added every 1st of month, and values updated, some more data, like YoY growth , diff from 3 month moving average, etc let me know the financial health. YMMV.
l
Nice @powerful-state-7137 Would love to check out the sheet sometime. Any chance you can delete the data and share a copy? Or do you think it would be too niche for your use case?
a
@powerful-state-7137 would surely want to see that doc as well as Saurabh said.
p
it's pretty easy ... just realized my first entry was 1st Jan 2013
l
Nice. Thanks for sharing @powerful-state-7137 Though I use Toshl mainly for stuff to give my CA (expenses, etc) β€” might make sense to have this Network calculator to track how much I donate to the stock markets every month 😬

i couldn't figure out a way to add 'investement earnings' vs 'hard-earned money' .. but i'm too lazy to do any expreiment on this now
