I see this requirement on quite a lot of job postings - "Canditate should have an engineering/management degree from a Tier 1 institute" I am genuinely curious, is there a significant difference between candidates from Tier 1 institutes and Tier 2/3 institutes?

I don't understand these type of statements too. I mean what are you trying to project by differentiating between a Tier 1 and Tier 2/3 candidates? I even got rejected once just because I was not from a Tier 1 institute. The recruiter first asked, "from which college you are?" followed that up with, "is this a Tier 1 institute?", to which I said NO. Then she said, "Okay, let me get back to you." (in short, we are not interested in your profile).
There are even organizations which explicitly mention on their JD that if you are not from a Tier 1 institute, don't bother applying, it will be rejected. I think the mentality behind this is, if you are from a Tier 1 institute then by default you are good at what you do and you will be a valuable addition to the team. On the other hand, if you are from Tier2/3, then "Ehhh!!! You might not be that good."

As a fresher, I was once told by a HR that, we give 14-15L to students with Tier 1 colleges. for others we don’t go over 7-8L. First thing from my mouth was, then let’s not schedule the next interview. It will be a waste of time for both of us. Just don’t apply. Even if you are good enough and clear all interviews, they’ll lowball you.

Basically they are applying a kind of filter. Tier 1 institutes are filled with hardworking people.
@dazzling-autumn-14365 Yeah it's a TRUE. Most companies try to lowball Tier2/3 candidates even for same role and skill level.

@dazzling-autumn-14365 This is true. I know this from my personal experience. In my first org, for the profile of ML Developer, my package was ~7 lakhs/annum, while another member of our department from a Tier 1 institute (I think it was IIT Kanpur or Kharagpur) had a package of ~11-12 lakhs/annum.

My opinion. This is discrimination and should be illegal. Period.

I had a similar experience. I joined Oracle as a fresher for 7.5LPA after an year, 3 new freshers joined my team from some IIT but from a Mechanical background and manager assigned me to train a guy from them. After a couple of months I got to know I was training a guy who has 23LPA + Some stock options 😂😅 and it blew my mind, I even discussed this with my manager and his reply was that is the market standard 😉 . This was one of the main motivating factor for me to leave Indian market and get into remote roles.
