As per this article, SII is planning to increase the production capacity from 2.5 billion to 3 billion in a year (or from 250 to 300 crore). A rough calculation would give, ~21 crore doses per month. Given, that the vaccination drive started from mid-Jan, up until April, SII would have produced ~63 crore doses, let's say 60 crore (since it took some time to ramp up the production). In between India send ~55 million vaccines (two weeks ago) to other nations, that leaves us with 60-5.5 = 54.5 crore vaccines. But, till date we have only vaccinated 15.5 crore people and still there is a "*shortage*" of vaccine and we till don't know when the slots for 18+ will open. Am I missing something here? What are your thoughts? 🤔

SII doesn't provide only to India, they have international committments as well

production capacity of 2.5 billion is estimate at end of financial year and they will scale up with time , so per month quota will increase with time so maybe by next quarter they will come to full production
d
They were doing 60m a month. They had hoped to do 100m a month by end of May but will now do so in July. The article itself says this and is the first para below the headline
Production capacity doesn't equal production. Supply of Input to vaccine could cause issues and also they can't stockpile a lot as well as storage capacity was limited and the vaccines have a 6 month shelf life
In January they had 60m in stockpile and govt wasnt committing and also not ramping up so they actually had to slow down a bit
Summary - covishield began with stockpile of 60m in Jan and have been doing about 60m a month. They will ramp up to 100m a month by July and continue ramping up.
Did a bit of reading up on the 2.5billion capactiy - need to see the actual interview if it's available- but he's talking about SII total vaccine capacity. Not just covishield. The article doesn't make it clear what is what.
For reference - before all this they were doing 1.5 billion doses of ALL vaccines that they manufacture per year. They increased that capacity to 2.5 billion and then 3billion now.

Vaccination wastage also needs to be considered
q
Yes, as of 20th April, the vaccine wastage was 4.6 million. Rounding it off to 5 million, still leaves us with 54.5 crore - 45 lakhs ~ 54 crore. And as, @modern-table-48211 mentioned, that SII has international commitments, I have considered those too (~55 million). Are there other international commitments which I have missed? The point which I missed is stated by @damp-coat-97256, that this production capacity is for all vaccines that SII produces or only for Covidshield?
c
It is SII's projection that they are able to produce this much at the end of this year. They are currently producing 6-7 crore vaccines per month in India. In April month they received Rs.3000/- crore from Central government to increase production from 6-7 crore to 10 crore. The 3 billion doses per year may also includes the SII's new production unit in UK.
