"We're a fully distributed company, scouting for people in the US to join our team full-time." I just saw this in a posting and found it very hilarious. 😂

Why? Because they don't hire outside the US? The US has 5 timezones and it is accurate to call it a distributed company if they have multiple locations and allow remote work. Not all companies can or want to deal with the complexities of hiring abroad.

US is a big country in itself. Distributed means all people in different locations. Usually when they say US, they are open to Canada, Mexico.

I don't think all remote work is distributed. But not sure. 🤔

Yeah. but I still think US only should not call themselves "fully distributed company". It should at least have one international person.

Nops. They denied to someone asking from Canada.

There are multiple levels of remote work, I've worked in the following types of remote companies: 1. I can have a fully remote company with all employees in Bangalore - all it means is that folks don't need to go into an office to get things done e.g. HR, salary, getting hardware, etc. The team can still meet if they need to, but don't have to. 2. However, it would be stupid for me to run such a company though and not take advantage of talent in other places in India - where I can get equally smart people and maybe a lot cheaper. It is still easy to run since we're all following the same tax laws and currency in the same time zone. 3. The next level of remote is to take advantage of the wealth of talent outside India and the potential cost differential e.g. Bulgaria, Hungary, Spain, Poland, Vietnam all have very talented programmers that are cheaper than programmers in Bangalore. But this adds lots of overhead in terms of time zones, government bureaucracies, taxation(!!!) so I would think twice before doing it. That company is choosing to stay at Level 2. For now. Let's be thankful this is becoming more common (even within a country) 🙂

Ideally they should write fully distributed company within US. And specify the timezone and taxation reasons as well , People who are from different country will not waste their time by applying to it .
