Hey fam ๐Ÿ‘‹ , do you think it makes sense for us here to have a stream channel anyone can walk in/out when they want to work in public (within this remote community)? This is pretty common on Discord servers (I know from the programming related servers). Have not seen this so much on Slack but for a remote community it kinda fits well.

Like for me, it does help sometimes when my mind is blank and I jump into a good voice/video ongoing chat on Python, JS, TS or any other Discord servers. But they are very specific to programming. Maybe here we can have any work (not just programming) and anyone can simply work and others join in, just a short hello or brainstorm?
m
I use focusmate for this purpose
w
@melodic-jordan-81418 is there a plugin for this for Slack? I mean I know focusmate but having a channel inside Slack is just so much easier. It is a perfect addition to a remote folks communication channel.
d
A public drop-in/out channel sounds great! Though, Discord etc. gives you rooms (ie. for gaming, designing and programing etc.), a single channel for all streamers might cause conflict of intentions!
b
@wide-carpet-65149 Which discord servers have good channels?
c
Let's do an experiment - Come join me here ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://beta.workfrom.coffee/cafes/om9dea
f
I was actually thinking of starting something like this just for fun. Although not exactly 24*7 active. Just a group of people meeting and working live and possibly brainstorming with each other.
b
Haha workfrom is good
f
I kinda liked it. Maybe we can do 30mins - 1 hour focus sessions at a particular time every day.

Doing it at a particular time becomes difficult for me. In that case, one of you can host a space and post the link on #tribe when you start.
w
@broad-camera-13514 Python, Deno both have almost daily voice/video casual streams. Sometimes large discussions. Python has multiple voice channels.

@calm-grass-85557 I guess in Slack the way to do it would be have a dedicated channel where anyone posts a link when they start a shared stream.
I do not know of a Slack plugin that might be more seamless, but I know from experience Slack sucks at audio/video. Discord rules that part. The experience might not compare ๐Ÿ˜ญ
@broad-camera-13514 almost all major programming languages have large (10K+) user servers on Discord. JS, TS, Rust, etc. And many have voice channels.
Voice/video channels are a built-in feature of Discord though in case anyone is comparing to Slack. A channel is simply a voice/video, which means you enter and you automatically switch to audio/video.
OK I just went through this: https://mahakavach.slack.com/apps/category/At7KGP7Z3N-voice-video IMHO there is nothing that compares to the Discord experience. Strange, it seems they are not catering to the stream audience much.
This is a screenshot of a current stream on Python Discord. If you notice on the left side, channel list, we simply have Voice channels. Just jump in, they are all live all the time. Either people are in them or not. Super seamless.
f
Slack is really lagging on that front. Only edge I see that slack has over discord, is the threading. Otherwise discord has seamless streaming, voice channels, no stupid search history limitation, and it's a breeze to be part of multiple servers/communities at the same time, which feels like a mess on Slack.

+1 for this idea. Slack is building voice channels. We could use a slack app til then maybe Eg: https://slack.com/apps/ANZMX2DPH-remotehq?tab=more_info

@nice-agency-42202 I have a feeling Slack has stopped progressing after their acquisition. Or maybe I just do not care enough to see if they are making much improvement.
@famous-art-1142 yes for sure. Discord just gets a lot of things right. Slack just made a few billion $. And the founding team retired I guess.
n
Ya I prefer discord over slack too
d
So this is something a lot of Slack channels are doing. Visualize Value has moved to discord from Slack as well. I think the affinity to video, streaming and media makes Discord a better tool for new age communities. I think it would be great to have discord, parallel to Slack and see if that gets traction over time.
w
Discord was created for gaming and streaming folks, so this is their focus. Slack's features are more focused on business/team management. I am not sure if parallel will work but it is worth a shot if we want to have a remote + digital space to walk into any time and co-work virtually.

Can someone start a Discord group with different channels for different purposes? I will post it onย #announcementsย channel when you're ready. And folks can have both Slack and Discord open - I suppose. Let's see how this goes. I am happy to go with the flow here.

Tarun, did you just read my mind mindblown ๐Ÿ˜

Discord was made for gamers, but their focus has moved from there sometime back. It's no longer just for gamers. It's used by programmers a lot. And for general purpose groups as well.
b
@wide-carpet-65149 That's awesome, so people just screenshare their work?
w
@broad-camera-13514 yeah, very similar to Twitch.tv if you know that. Livestream of games, programming is very common. A bit geeky territory though.
b
I would love soemthing like that haha. What would your top 3 servers be?
