Paypal has been quite convenient in situations in which you have to update your Credit Card. Now, we’ll need to manually pay bills when stuff fails now with auto pay. Not sure how its going to pan out. Even if the online service does not need 2FA, will CC companies honour it or fail it - causing you to scamper last minute for domain renewals, etc. Recently Canva sent me an email saying that I am now on a prepaid plan (from a postpaid one) (I have an annual plan) and my audible payments have been failing without being able to add a new credit card (everything fails) 🤷 And Spotify now offers only prepaid plans in India. The other down side is that you will now end up paying annual charges more often than monthly charges just to reduce pain in your life.

This was supposed to be an ideal replacement https://www.bhimupi.org.in/UPIautopay but I haven’t seen anyone providing this an option. Additionally, updated UPI protocol also supports adding credit cards, but that too is limited to certain card types.

The whole e-mandate thing has been extremely stupid. Atleast with credit/debit cards, in case of fraud or any other situation, me or my relatives could go to the bank and immediately block the card. Now we are stuck in this stupid mess. E-mandates are active for 10 years by default. I don't see how that's helping at all. Moreover, in case of issues, I don't even know how to cancel one.

Haha .. Don’t get me started on e-Mandate. My wife has one setup with the power discom here — paying the bills for her older home - and we haven’t been able to cancel it at all — neither with ICICI nor with the discom (Mah State Board). Luckily that is her maternal home - so she pays the bills and it’s okay. Someone forgot to implement the uninstall functionality. However, I had one setup with IndMoney and when I cancelled my account, they did stop charging — so I think it may have to be implemented at the implementor’s end.

UPI autopay is being used by apps like Groww and upstox for applying for ipos

The new card mandate scheme that RBI came out with is great, as far as the specifications were concerned. RBI forced a deadline to ensure people moved on to the new specification. Now, I assume this is the transition headache. Newer card mandate scheme allows one to cancel mandates from bank side, providing a simpler way of managing all your mandates. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I am confused with the RBI guidelines on mandates. Do they only apply to debit/credit card auto-payments? I have bank mandates set for my Mutual Fund SIPs, do they get impacted?
r
(Based on my understanding) All mandates to merchants settling to a bank account in India should get impacted. Any mandate which involves money getting settled outside India are not covered by RBI scheme.
h
After reading more into it, none of the bank mandates (standing instructions put on accounts directly) should get impacted. RDs, bank mandates for SIPs don't seem to be impacted. Neither is Smartpay on hdfc cards.
