What would you prefer as an extended/secondary display for a Macbook Pro 2021 (14" M1 Pro) and why? 1. 27 inch Full HD (144hz or more) 2. 27 inch 4K (60hz) 3. 27 inch Full HD Curved (75hz or more) I liked the idea of a curved one initially but my desk has limited space and I currently do not do any gaming.
r
For me personally 27 inch 4k 60hz would be perfect anything beyond 27inches requires too much head movements / scaling I don't do gaming so anything beyond 60hz won't be of much use. QHD should do the trick but having 4k will help with content watching.

Go with 2nd, you can also look at ultrawide displays if you have space. Main reason behind 4k is that scaling support for 1080p and 2k is very poor on MacOS and also 1080p was too pixelated for me even with 21inch monitor

Thanks, I just ordered one (4k60)

I ordered a LG UL550 yesterday which is a 27" 4k 60Hz panel and received it today. I have been using a Dell U2720Q from my work for the work Mac. Both are amazing displays and work well with both MacOS and Linux.

I had narrowed it down to Samsung Odyssey G5 (1000R Curved, 2K, 144Hz) and Philips 276E (Flat, 4K, 60Hz) as my budget was 20k (extended to 25k). I’ve ordered the Philips one, will post feedback tomorrow.
g
I have heard good things about G5 as well, but I have seen people recommending against curved monitors as the geometry is distorted.
a
To be honest, I am getting the G5 for 22k under samsung’s offer but Vishal said 2K resolution would not be ideal to use with a mac and I don’t have a lot of space. So I just went with the 4K option.
g
True! I avoided 2k because I would need to do fractional scaling on Linux and the support for that is not that good. 😞
a
Yeah. Let’s hope this Philips one is good. I saw reviews on Youtube that say great things and it’s definitely VFM.
Might get a PS5 in the coming months to do some casual gaming. 🙂
And PS5 also does not support 2K (you can only use 1080p). So 4K is a safer bet overall.

Good luck for the PS5! 🤞🏼

thanks!

Always always: 4K monitor used in Full HD resolution, so you get high pixel density.

Thanks, this is helpful!
Got the Philips 276E and I must say that it’s perfect. Narrow bezels, sturdy metal stand, just the right size, and a lot of pixels (4K) to work with. I’ve found no calibration issues or backlight bleed at all. Using it with the new 14" MacBook Pro (HDMI). If you want a good monitor under 25k, this seems like a very safe bet. I’m sure you can get it for cheaper during sale events. All the other good brands start from 30k onwards.
v
@adamant-judge-51663 the backlight bleed on my LG monitor started 2 years later.
a
Ohh, well that never happened in my experience, I’ve used Dell/HP before. 🤞🏼 But one concern with cheap monitors is that they have bleed/ uneven brightness on black screens right from the beginning of usage (it’s got to do with the quality with which they are assembled, some units have it and some don’t)

@gorgeous-tent-29765 What cable/adapter are you using with the LG one?
g
@dazzling-author-99268 I use a Belkin USB C hub for connecting both my laptops to the LG monitor. I snagged it at a good price during a sale.

But this belkin hub only supports 4k 30Hz output, so if you have 4k display then avoid this hub. @dazzling-author-99268
