I am planning to get a firetvstick rather than local cable connection since no major DTH providers have been approved yet in my building. • Is firestick convenient enough for parents to switch between news channels and the basic entertainment channels? I mean can we reorganise tiles on the home screen so channel selection isn't hard for parents and they have the list of channels they watch right at top? • Is the connectivity with WiFi as good as Chromecast since my router is about 15 feet away from the TV?

Yes and better than Chromecast in my experience. The remote is very friendly and you don't need to bother with re-arranging stuff. It also has voice search which is super useful. I'd recommend getting the 4K version even if you don't have a 4K TV because it is more powerful hardware and will last longer without needing to replace it.

FireTV is the best streaming stick I have seen so far, it's very intuitive. Give it a try ;)
