Is anyone using iPad as an extended monitor with MacBook? πŸ˜… I'm planning if I should get one, as: β€’ I'm looking for a portable monitor β€’ My use of extended monitor use is limited so using iPad will be handy and multipurpose I'm also open to explore an external monitor given the screen quality is as great as MacBook β€” as suggestions?

I use my ipad as a second monitor, it works good enough. Mainly, i code on my main screen and I keep the documentation, slack, etc on ipad screen. Make sure to invest in an ipad cover which sets it at the right angle for you

Being able to carry a second screen is awesome! But I don't enjoy using it because the screen is very small (I have the 11). It's good for putting video calls and video players in but I can't use it for writing, reading, or designing. Being able to connect wirelessly at the click of a button is great! But this can lead to the connection dropping sometimes (when the laptop goes to sleep, etc). So it's not like a second screen I can use all day. All in all, if you're getting an iPad for other things, this is another thing you can use it for. But I won't recommend getting an iPad just for using it as a second screen. Hope this helps you make your decision.

I am always sceptical about these gimmicks ^

Look for portable monitors on Amazon. I don't see the point of spending soo much on an iPad for a display that small.

Thanks, all! Yeah, I'm not going for iPad just for external monitor but for multipurpose use β€” the use-case would be similar to what Shivam mentioned. I will check some external monitors and take the decision πŸ™‚

Also, I forgot to tell that apple’s universal control is πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ my mind was blown away when i tried it

I use it everyday as my second screen as I can't really carry around a monitor given how much I move. I also use Duet over sidecar whenever using a wired connection because it still allows me to use touch controls on the iPad.

Do you use iPad Pro, Faraz? Wondering if Air (10’9 inch) would be too small screen πŸ€” Pro (12’9 inch) would be expensive!

I use the 12.9 inch Pro

Did not know about this. How has your experience with Duet been @helpful-raincoat-87337? Which plan are you on?
e
Interesting, I also didn't know about Duet. Do you really need if you plan to use universal control? πŸ€”
h
I haven't used Universal Control. I already owned Duet even before Apple launched Sidecar. To answer Sankalp’s question, the experience is more customizable and like mentioned above, I can use touch to focus/zoom/scroll and do more things based on what app I am using vs nothing at all when using Sidecar.

For Shubham, Duet does claim to work cross-platform so maybe it lets you use a windows/android device as a second screen?

Missed the part about what plan I am on, I am not on a subscription. I just bought the app from the App Store and use that which only allows me to use it with a wired connection which is how I use it most of the time anyway.
